Analysts: Edwards, Richardson fell short of goals
By STEPHEN BEALE
Union Leader Correspondent

John Edwards and Bill Richardson did not make as strong a showing as they had hoped in the Democratic Presidential debate yesterday while Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama didn't lose any ground, political analysts at St. Anselm College said.

I do not agree that Edwards did poorly at all. One person thoutht that he was argumentative. His pont was very important though. By Vetoing any bill to start to end the war in Iraq, George Bush threw down the gauntlet and I agree with Edwards that it was the moment to stand up to Bush and vote to
stop funding. At a time when Obama and Hillary could have shown a leadership role in having the Congress finally stand up to Bush they sat by quietly and said nothing. They voted against the funding but they could have been leading. The other important point that only Edwards brought up is how BUsh's War on Terror is a bumper sticker slogan used for an array of purposes without being a war. I think that most Americans are in agreement with that but the others are going to continue this charade. Terrorism has been around throughout the middle east and into Europe since the 1970's but I suppose all those bombings in European Coffee shops and discos and other public places do not count. Only when America is attacked. Now all of a sudden we haer about all these terrorist groups. They have been there, and here all along.

Personally, I was impressed by Edwards in this debate. I'm more than a little disappointed at the analysis here, though - it's real style-over-substance stuff. Instead of giving one person's unsupported opinion of how Edwards "came across", why not give us some actual substantive analysis of whether he was actually right that he's displayed leadership that the other candidates haven't? This horse-race stuff that the media obsesses over really does a disservice to voters, in my opinion.

John Edwards was argumentative and annoying - a real turn off. Both Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama demonstrated why they are ahead of the pack - they possess gravitas. Sen. Dodd and Gov. Richardson also made a lot of sense. They are both solid candidates for VP.

Questions were askied, but no one except Hillary gave an immediate answer. Edwards will be off preaching morals, not what I want. Hillary will end the war, this is what I want. Gravel very good performance and hit home on a couple of remarks. The eventual winner will be the person who pledges to do something about gas prices.
