GOP fundraiser to feature machine gun shoot

By SCOTT BROOKS
New Hampshire Union Leader Staff

City Republicans will be packing some serious firepower at their next party fundraiser.

Tired of the usual chicken dinners, the Manchester Republican Committee is planning to arm supporters next month with Uzis, M-16 rifles and other automatic weapons for a day of target practice at a Pelham firing range.

"The thought just struck me one day: a machine gun shoot. What the heck?" said Jerry Thibodeau, the committee chairman.

Thibodeau, who is himself a hunter and skeet shooter, pitched the Aug. 5 event as a fun social gathering, as well as a demonstration of the party's support for Second Amendment rights.

Uzi 75px

The concept prompted shudders across the political aisle. Chris Pappas, the city Democratic party chairman, called the event "not just in poor taste; it is downright offensive."

"The citizens of Manchester have lived through a deadly spike in violent crime the past year-and-a-half, despite the campaign promises of (Mayor) Frank Guinta to lower crime rates," Pappas said. "That the mayor's political party would seek to glorify the use of machine guns for political gain is unconscionable."

The GOP fundraiser will be held at the Pelham Fish and Game Club. Proceeds, Thibodeau said, will be split among the party, the club and the gun supplier.

Republican party leaders are hoping for a strong showing of both novices and experienced shooters. The cost to participants is $25, plus fees for ammunition and parking.

Each of the Republican Presidential candidates was invited, Thibodeau said, but all declined, saying they'll be busy preparing for the following weekend's much-ballyhooed straw poll in Ames, Iowa.

"I really tried to get Rudy Giuliani there," Thibodeau said. "Because I'll tell you, this is a guy that can't relax."

Bob Shaunessy, who chairs the Pelham club's class-3 weapons committee, says he expects shooters will get to select from a range of submachine guns, including Uzis, MAC-11s and Swedish K's, as well as M-16 and AR-15 rifles.

Twenty safety experts, called "range officers," will be on hand to load the guns and monitor the shooters, Shaunessy said. On-site instruction will be required for all participants.

"My first and foremost goal is that everybody who walks in walks out," Thibodeau said.

Few may be more excited about the event than the man who conceived it.

Thibodeau, who recently celebrated his 60th birthday, said he has not fired a machine gun in 40 years.

A Seacoast native, Thibodeau was exposed to guns at an early age. His father, he said, was a machine gunner in Guadalcanal during World War II.

Thibodeau's own experience with machine guns began at 18, he said, when a friend and his father took him out to fire rounds in a sand pit.

The experience, he said, was powerful.

"It's a way of expressing yourself, I guess," he said. "We all have a little testosterone in us, right?"

And yet, he said, many of the people responding to the event advertisements have been women.

The city committee's executive director, Kelly Hurst, said she, too, is excited about the chance to fire a machine gun for the first time.

No stranger to guns, Hurst said she carries a small pistol for personal protection, but notes, "I've never felt a need to carry a machine gun down the street with me."

"It's very different," Hurst said. "I don't know when anyone else, man or woman, may get an opportunity to do this."

Manchester Republicans have several other social events in the works. The committee recently launched a monthly mixer, known as "Thirsty Thursdays," at Murphy's Tap Room on Elm Street.

Other events are more family-friendly. A Sept. 16 rally at Veterans Park will include face painting, rock climbing and, Thibodeau said, an inflatable "moon walker."

"It's about people meeting people," Thibodeau said. "Get the heck away from the computer, get the heck away from work. Come on out and talk to people."

I have to laugh at Louie of Bedford's singular focus on retaining his right to own guns. You're so RIGHT Louie- but just one question for you- what is it you think you're protecting? A huge national debt? foreign ownership of america's assetts? The skyrocketing cost of unmanaged healthcare? Dependance on foreigh oil with NO alternative energy plan? Face it Louie- in a couple of hundred years, if there still is an America, there will be a bunch of dopes with nothing but guns standing around happy they won the battle but oblivious they lost the war.
And to the poster who stated "America forever"- Dude- pleade understand America is on the decline. Thats pretty generally accepted by anyone with any hisorical knowledge and perspective.

On 1991 I did swear to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic. Why some of us want to prevent our fellow citizens from their right to use weapons in an orderly and responsible manner? The city of Derry takes $664.40 a month on property taxes from my pay check in addition to the $758.03 that I have to pay in taxes bi weekly. I don’t like children but most of my property taxes go to school. I don’t complain about it and I strongly belief others should do the same about this event. Taxation without representation is tyranny? Can I please keep my weapons? Can my fellow citizens meet and conduct meeting and activities as they please? I went out without sex for 420 days in my last deployment to Iraq on 2006 and trained our infantry men everyday at 5AM for the last 16 years. What have you done for your country lately in order to preserve democracy beside complain about others not spending their time according to your expectations-standards? Please advice.

Coming up with an idea to allow people to fire a machine gun for a fundraiser is a unique idea and probably an insightful and smart way to bring together a group of supporters who probably are more curious than actual firearm fanatics. I think most of the negative feedback I have read here is mostly arguments for argument sake. I have been to dinners and barbeques and this idea “machine gun firing” is quite intriguing.

Alcohol and cars create some of the most horrific tragedies in this country each year. I never see editorials stating we should ban alcohol or possibly increase the age of a driver’s license to 18. I have seen a few kids around the 16 to 18 year old range driving down Elm Street on sport bikes in flip flops and t-shirts, a tragedy waiting to happen. But, with the number of motorcycle and drunk driving deaths by teenagers, I have yet to here we should ban motorcycles or cars.

I think it is more appalling that people tend to use tragic events as a means to attempt to shame someone from pursuing a legal activity. As if the 99.8% of us who do not commit violent acts should change our behavior or view evil in something as simple as firing a firearm, because of a tragic event.

Whatever the manner these tragedies arise, either by physical violence, firearms, cars, motorcycles, alcohol or abuse, one fact remains, the deaths occur because no matter what, individual people decide for themselves to either kill themselves or kill others, it is not the hardware they use.

As for Mr. Thibodeau’s political fundraiser I am certain it will be very successful. It takes courage to commit to a belief and jump into the fray, a true mark of a New Hampshire citizen, either they be a republican, democrat or independent.
- Todd Lizotte, Hooksett

Guns are protected by the 2nd amendment for 1 purpose, to kill tyrants. Hunting is not in the 2nd amendment.
Cats have claws but they run from bigger animals unless cornered. Wolves will kill sheep unless there is a sheep dog there to warn to sheepherder or to attack and kill the wolf.
In this day and age, the tyrants are in the neighborhoods selling drugs, around the corner assaulting and robbing little old ladies. It is the job of "We the People" to strand vigilant and to keep watch in out neighborhoods. Under the NH. State law Chapter 110-b "The Militia" section 110-b:1
110-B:1 Composition of the Militia. –
I. The militia shall be divided into 3 classes, namely the national guard, the state guard, and the unorganized militia.
II. The national guard shall consist of an army national guard, an air national guard, and an inactive national guard. As used in this chapter, the term ""national guard'' shall mean and refer to the army national guard and the air national guard unless otherwise indicated.
III. The state guard shall consist of those persons serving in accordance with the provisions of RSA 111.
IV. The unorganized militia shall consist of all able-bodied residents of the state who are 18 years of age or older, who are, or have declared their intention to become, citizens of the United States, and who are not serving in the national guard or the state guard.
V. When authorized by the laws and regulations of the United States, there shall be an additional section of the state guard to be known as the New Hampshire naval militia. Source. 1981, 434:1. 1985, 144:1, eff. July 19, 1985.

It is our JOB to be ever vigilant. In doing so we need to know how to use the tools of war. If we all were vigilant, drugs would not be being sold in our Cities and bad guys would think twice about committing crime
I say, "come one come all to the Machine Gun Shoot".

I have been a Republican and voted straight Republican tickets for over 25 years. I DO know how to handle a gun. I am not afraid of guns. I have had self-defense training. Both my mother and father served in World War II. (My mother out ranked my father and served behind Eisenhower in North Africa and served in Italy as a nurse behind the front lines. I support the second Amendment right to bear arms. I am absolutely appalled that the Manchester Republican committee thinks that a machine gun shoot is a good idea.

Instead of spending time on shooting “guns for fun”, why don’t you focus your efforts on positive goals such as:

1. Health care reform. Making health care affordable and quality. Our US Health Care System is a total mess.

2. Keeping Americans employed (jobs and employment security). Do you know that workers over 45 are being laid off (due to high health care costs) and cannot find decent paying jobs? Do you know why? Do you care?

3. Promoting veterans health care benefits (it is a disgrace that our veterans are returning to an underfunded VA system)

4. Promoting energy efficiency and lessening our dependence on coal and oil. Will the next fund raiser be a “Drive Your Hummer to the GOP silver plate dinner”?

Shoot a gun? What a big thrill! What could you be thinking, GOP? I heard a radio story yesterday on the topic and someone representing the Manchester Republican Committee was interviewed. I hope that I never meet that individual. I cringed when I heard the person talk about how it puts a smile on your face after you get done shooting. I was so embarrassed for the GOP. Why can’t you people work on solving problems? What a waste of energy!

I AM ASHAMED TO CALL MYSELF A REPUBLICAN.

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent
Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.
Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns! While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.
- Louie Watson, Bedford, NH

I must admit when I first read the GOP was going to have a shooting event I said to myself What idiot thought this up. But as I read the comments pro and con I decided;
A. Why not practice what we preach-the right to keep and bear arms
B.show the Terrorists that we aren't allthe passivists they see on TV
C. I've lived in NYC too long
Wish I could be there
I suggest you use bin laden paper targets

I was laughing at the ignorant statement Jane Beaulieu made

"If we're trying to fight crime, why is it there's a fundraiser where they're focusing on playing with guns?"

What does law abiding citizens going to a shooting range have to do with crime????
Thats like saying we should kick out the Fisher Cats because they use bats and those are often used to commit crimes!

First, I'm not at all surprised that so many women responded. Second, this is a wonderful way of getting people who say they support Second Amendment rights to prove they will go public in the arena that counts: the public -- not Congress. I sincerely hope this catches on and that the NRA will benefit as well. WHAT can the Admininstration expect: with no border security, citizens will most definitely arm themselves.
- Helen Jefferson, Alameda, CA

"To compare the awful tragedy of Virginia Tech to a baseball game is just awful." I don't believe Mr. Pelletier compared VT to a baseball game. He compared VT to a brutal and horrfic beating with a baseball bat that occured in the city in the not too distant past. I think it's reasonably clear that his intention was to compare a baseball game to another gathering of law abiding people enjoying a lawful pasttime for fun.
- Adam Wells, Manchester

If one is a hunter then I concede that the primary function of a gun used for that purpose is to kill, but not to kill people. So let's be honest about that and stop the half truths.

If one owns a gun for self-defense then the primary purpose of that weapon is not to kill another but to prevent the owner from being killed. It is only as a last resort that a responsible gun owner would use that gun to kill another human being in self-defense or in the defense of one's family. Stopping the threat is primary and that does not necessarily require lethal force.

Regarding the comment that the Republicans are glorifying guns, again a half truth. At best they are glorifying gun use a recreational sport, ie. in a non-criminal manner. I don't see any problem with that and why anyone would compare the legal use of any object to the illegal use of that object escapes my critical thinking capabilities.

Oh, I do have a college degree; a couple of them in fact. ...and no I do not have access to a spell-checker at the moment so save your attacks if I fat fingered this.

Hypothetical Question:
Would you support legislation that would prevent people who do not vote from being allowed to read or to own books if the following were the law of the land?

"A well educated electorate, being necessary to the maintenance of a free State, the right of the people to own and read books, shall not be infringed."
- Bill DeFranzo, Hampton

In response to Mike Puckett’s obvious ignorance to my argument, my exact words were “if it is so easy to keep firearms out of the hands of “bad” people.” I am not suggesting that class three weapons are used in every violent crime in America. The point I am making is that guns in general are weapons that end lives, whether they are class three machine guns or semi-automatic hand guns. After the horrific events at Virginia Tech this year, it is insensitive as well as offensive to have this kind of event sponsored by a major political party. I was torn apart by the tragedy in April as I’m sure many other college students as well as families of the victims were. I was afraid to go to class the next day, and to have a public figure such as Mr. Thibodeau endorse this kind of event, is not only scary but an embarrassment to the state of New Hampshire. Imagine how you would feel if a loved one had been killed by gun violence and you saw your political party endorsing an event touting these weapons as a sport. Mr. Puckett, please make sure you understand my argument before attacking it next time.
- Casey Bessette, Bow

Michael Pelletier, your words were deeply offensive to me. To compare the awful tragedy of Virginia Tech to a baseball game is just awful. People DIED that day, in what was the worst school shooting in this nation's history, and you mock them.
Also, your argument is completely illogical. What is the intended purpose of a gun, whether it be a class three firearm or a handgun? To kill. They were manufactured so that people could kill, and in the case of the guns being used at this event, to kill other people. You cannot deny that this is their intended purpose.
The intended purpose of a baseball bat, however, is to play baseball. Next time, think your arguments through.
- Jason M., Bow

Not long ago in Manchester, a man was beaten to within an inch of his life, and left permanently disabled, by an attacker with a baseball bat.

And yet night after night during the summer, the Fisher Cats and their opponents play blithely on in that very same city, swinging their deadly baseball bats, completely insensitive to the scourge of bat violence gripping Manchester.

Have they no shame? It's downright offensive!
- Michael Pelletier, Merrimack

I'm about as not-republican as you can get, but I wholeheartedly support their rights to get together and have fun in whatever way they want. People who are raining insults over them need to examine whether they have a problem with the event itself or just because it's taking place in the opposite political party. Let's face it, raising money this way sure beats taking a major donation from some lobbying group, doesn't it?
- Joshua, Northfield

Why do they have to use machine guns? If this is about sport, why not use the guns that people use for sport. Muzzleloaders, bird shot, a quiver of arrows even. I am apalled at the GOP and this pretty much seals the deal of where my votes go.
- Marc Ford, Manchester

" Class 3 firearms are so regulated that ONLY good people can own them,” is not only tactless but also ignorant. If it is so easy to keep firearms out of the hands of “bad people” as he is so quick to label them, then why do we have massacres like Virginia Tech? "

Casey,

I am sorry but the ignorance is entirely on your part.

The weapons used during the Virginia Tech massacre were not Class Three weapons.

There have been zero, none, no massacres committed by National Firearms Act or 'Class 3' weapons. In fact, in over 50 years and of the over 50 thousand weapons that fall under this classification, there has only been one murder with a Class 3 weapon.

These are the least criminally abused class of weapons in history. Even golf clubs are more criminally misused.

9 out of 10 violent criminals agree: 'The streets would not be safer by putting the potential for death in more persons' hands.' I mean, seriously, everybody knows "victims" aren't supposed to be able to fight back... why that just isn't fair! Think of the poor carjacker, robber or rapist who's just trying to do his best to get by... can you imagine the stress and anxiety he'd have to face while plying his trade if he had to worry about people fighting back instead of being good little victims? Honestly now, what his 'right' to victimize you at his pleasure?
- Adam Wells, Manchester

Should I feel dirty? One of these fine folks found the path to my website and my e-mail address and said "you should feel dirty as the gun supplier for this upcoming event"

Well Sir,
I not only feel clean - but proud to supply the machineguns for the MRC event - Heck I would go the same for the DNC if you would ask nicely. My customers are a mix from both sides of the fence (yes, many Democrats shoot at the Manchester Firing Line). When are you going to understand that we're not doing drive bye shootings, school shootings,or even knocking off the corner 7-11? My customer list also includes many police agencies both local and federal.

Wake up people - legal gun owners are not your enemy!

When we we ever stop blaming the tool for the crime?

I hope to see some fine people there for the shoot - I promise not to ask if you're a Democrat.

Our forefathers would be shaking their heads in disbelief. Cause they held shooting events frequently. Did they have "to much testosterone"? and did they lower the level by having gun shooting events?
I think they would find it offensive to not hang convicted criminals ex-post-haste.
I don't think shooting guns, racing cars, following NASCAR, shooting off fireworks, drinking beer, and yes, even a belch are signs of a deeply disturbed person, male or female.
What I do think is a disturbing is that a leader of the party in power is quick to pass judgement and skew the facts to meet his agenda. And sure enough the Bush bashers have joined in. ( He must, somehow, be involved and responsible and if we cannot prove it, at least we can blame him.)
The envelope please,..... "Originality of Thought, Fund raiser Category" ........ goes to........Manchester Republicans.!!!

- ET Reed, Nottingham, NH

I find this event to be absolutely despicable and embarrassing for the state of New Hampshire. The point is this: guns were intended for military protection, when the constitution was written some 220 years ago. Now, by having this event, we are admitting and endorsing the use of guns for such selfish purposes as a fund raiser. We are teaching our children that guns are okay. And they're not. With Virginia Tech barely out of our short-term memory, guns for recreation is a blatant slap in the face.
As for Jane Aitken's suggestion of arming more people in the attempt to defend ourselves against crime, is she implying that we would all be safer with guns? We'd all be dead! If everyone had guns, our societal order would fall apart completely. The streets would not be safer by putting the potential for death in more persons' hands. This has nothing to do with democrat or republican, this has to do with common decency and safety.
- Sarah Argeropoulos, Bow, NH

Well...I'll tell you this. My husband and I have two guns. Before we purchased them, we visited a firing range several times to learn about different guns, how to clean them, proper storage and use, etc. All that being said, I think the idea of having a "gun outing" is completely out of line and those who are using the name of the Republican Party in order to promote this event are severely short-sited when it comes to the make-up and intelligence of their constituency. I am a Republican and yet I understand the distatefulness of undertaking this kind of event. And, I thinks its humorous that for all of the "dispersing of testosterone" this event is predicted to facilitaite, that many woman are interested in participating. So, does this mean that attending this event and shooting an AK-47 will help women with their estrogen or progesterone levels? Hmmmm.....something to ponder...

Please understand me, I believe that guns do have a proper place in our society, but to put on such an event, makes light of the fact that guns are meant to be used as a hunting tool (although I don't call it a "sport" when someone uses an automatic weapon), a form of personal protection, and often in a deadly way. Hey if a bunch of you Good Ole Boys want to get together at the shooting range to keep up your practice, and rid yourself of what appears to be a challenging level of testosterone, then all the power to you. But don't go running around touting that you're doing this on behalf of the Republican Party. In fact, I'd say that given the amount of crime in Manchester, the recent shootings at Virginia Tech, and the growing statistics of deaths by gun shots in this country, that a "reasonable" person would say to him/her-self, "Gee, maybe having a Rootin, Tootin, Gun Shootin event isn't the best way to light a fire under people in order to get donations for the Party; maybe I could increase the ranks of the Republican Party by doing something that doesn't counter life as we know it; maybe I could use my head instead of my trigger finger."
- Vanessa, Deerfield

I fully support the right to own machine guns, I have lots, but I question how we are going to win this election by courting people who are already strongly conservative. Anyone who would attend a machine gun shoot is already in our camp. The time/money would better be spent on those who are on the fence. Regardless, I wish I could attend. Sounds like fun. Maybe they can raise some money, we'll see.
- Craig Stull, Phoenix, AZ

I was laughing so hard when I read what the Democrats said about this, that I had to get control of myself. I am still smiling so broadly it hurts!

Everyone has the right to participate in this recreational activity, in this controlled environment.

And, if Manchester has had a small spike in crime, ALL THE MORE REASON! Knowing that residents may be armed and ready to defend themselves against anyone who thinks they will get away with violence, perhaps criminals will think again, especially about attacking women, who will be there in numbers as well.

Thank goodness NH still has this one freedom that the Democrats have not yet taken away from us.

Way to go Manchester, have a safe, fun time! The streets of Manchester will be safer for it....thank you UL for the publicity and the hilarious comments of the Democrats.
- Jane Aitken, Bedford, NH

The Manchester Republicans clearly have the right to hold this event, and I'm sure many of the members are quite excited. What disturbs me is that a major political party is promoting the use of weapons whose only real use is to harm and maim, all in the name of raising some money. I just don't buy the whole relaxation or protection argument. In all seriousness, do any of you expect to grab an Uzi or M-16 to protect the country from a tyrannical government any time soon? Don't throw out hypotheticals or preach about the 2nd Amendment, I know that they can apply. Just think realistically. What message do you really think this is sending? I don't think it's a coincidence that none of the Republican presidential candidates agreed to show up for the event.
- Andrew Maher, Bow

As a college freshman this past year, I was deeply affected by the horrific events at Virginia Tech in April, as I’m sure many others were. To see this kind of insensitive, disgusting display of “testosterone” as Mr. Thibodeau called it, is not only offensive but sickening. Paul DiMarco’s statement that “bad people with guns is bad. Good people with guns is good. Class 3 firearms are so regulated that ONLY good people can own them,” is not only tactless but also ignorant. If it is so easy to keep firearms out of the hands of “bad people” as he is so quick to label them, then why do we have massacres like Virginia Tech? Why do we have so many displays of violent shootings like in the case of Officer Briggs, Officer McKay or the triple murder in Conway a few weeks ago? I whole-heartedly agree with Chris Pappas and it scares me that anyone would support this event in a time where we don’t just have to worry about terrorism abroad but violence at home as well.
- Casey Bessette, Bow, NH

"My first and foremost goal is that everybody who walks in walks out," Thibodeau said.

This quote right here is enough to make me feel uneasy about this event. I agree with Chris Pappas; there are much better and more tasteful ways to raise money.
- Jason M., Bow

I'm a Republican and Thibodeau is an uidiot, I own a gun and fired it only when I learned to use it since then it has been put in a safe place and I would only use it if I had to defend myself. This is poor PR for the Republican City Committee where the crime rate is so high. I have absolutely no interest in firing an UZI, i guess this is being done to satisfy those with excessive testosterones that they need to release. Firing an UZI does not make you more masculine, but I guess some of Thibodeau's buddies need that outlet for their frustrations.
- Richard L. Fortin, Manchester, NH

Grace Karposky, Why Yes I have been to College thankyou. I have an AAS In POLICE SCIENCE and in one more term I will have BACHELORS OF SCIENCE IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE WITH A CONCENTRATION IN HOMELAND SECURITY. I have crunched numbers to death, and unlike you(I am Betting) I have been in a patrol car and worked on the street. You are the one who needs to do some proper research and stop repeating all of that leftist spin you get from the anti gunners. Here is one for you, 48% of people who defend themselves with a handgun never fire a shot(Cornell Law University) According the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports what you people refer to as "assault weapons" are used so little in violent crime that UCR calss the number insignificant, that is so low it is nearly unmeasureable. How about the National Crime and Victomization Survey? They have some interesting numbers about crime and guns (or more to the point the lack of guns) . 911 is a great thing, but when seconds count, when your life is on the line the only person I trust Is ME! Even with good response time, in teh time it takes an officer to respond to a violent situation in progress, the vic. can be dead and the bad guy gone. Guns are and always have been an impotant part of American Culture. My veiw is if you dont like America and its laws, get out. Have a Nice Day:)
- Don H Sadler, Erin, TN.

"that being said; none of these machine guns would be legal if Prez Bush had re-affirmed the assault weapons ban a few years back as he promised he would when he was a candidate in 1999. But hey, he's the decider.
- F Collins, Keene, NH"

Typical uninformed statement from an anti gun (anti self defense) person. The so called "assault weapon ban" had NOTHING to do with machineguns. The Brady Bunch, media, and others have been trying to confuse the general public for years and obviously have been successful.
- B. Volensky, Pike Road, AL

I haven't shot a machine gun in the automatic mode since I was honorably discharged from the army. I would love to go to this event to try some of the machine guns that I haven't had the opportunity to try in the past. The Strafford County Republican Committee is planning to have some kind of range day/fundraiser later this year, but I doubt we will be able to use any machine guns at it due to the apparent lack of ranges in the county that allow machine guns. I have found that after a stressful day, punching a ragged hole through a piece of paper at an extended distance can be quite calming. I only wish I had suppressors for my rifles so that I could protect my hearing better and reduce the amount of recoil that I feel from my more powerful rifles.
Chris Pappas, your statements make no sense. You seem to be suggesting that since a few criminals have committed crimes with guns, honest law abiding citizens shouldn't be using machine guns for lawful purposes, including profit and recreation. Because of the law passed in 1986, I have not been able to find a legally transferrable M240B (the last machine gun I carried when I was in the army) for sale for under $110,000. I think that we should repeal some of the restrictions on NFA firearms so that more law abiding Americans can afford to buy them. I've heard that "illegal" black market machine guns are much cheaper to acquire than legally acquired machine guns, although the penalties for possession of an "illegal" machine gun are often much more severe than crimes like murder, kidnapping or rape. If you hate the thought of law abiding civilians using machine guns, then I would like to invite you to move to MA or NY, where you are less likely to encounter law abiding civilians who own or use machine guns, but you will most likely encounter more criminals who are happy that you are unarmed. If you want help packing for your move, let me know, and I'll see if I can fit it into my schedule.
- Timothy Logsdon, Somersworth, NH

This will be a great event for the whole family.
Gun's are what keeps this great country free. So I encourage all freedom loving Americans to attend this event. and I find it unfortunate that Chris Pappas does not my support my personal freedoms even though I support his.
- Hon. Robert A. Burns, Manchester NH

By the way, Arms also includes bombs, biological and nucelar weapons. Why aren't you advocating for ownership of those, since they are arms, too?

Good luck defeating the government!
- Grace karposky, Barrington

I'm looking forward to all of the pro-war Republicans that show up to shoot firearms they wouldn't normally be able to shoot during a normal day. Unless of course they have some sort of military service under their belt - or are willing to enlist in the "greatest calling of our generation." I hear the College Republicans are very eager to sign up for military service so I hope some come for early training.
- Rich Robinson, Manchester

This is what the Republican party is all about. They should have their day on the range! These are necessary weapons supported by the party.
- Bob Monty, Candia

Good opportunity to keep up your automatic weapons skills; but, I'm disappointed there will be no M-60's there.

Will there be a firearms check to see if felons are participating?

Any chance of a M-79 outing?
- J Kelley, Gilman,VT

I'd like to take a moment and point out that the so called "Assault Weapon" ban had no effect on real machine guns. It didn't apply to machine guns at all, in fact, only semi-automatic weapons that looked like machine guns made after 1994. Real machine guns are under a more restrictive ban dating back to 1986 which prohibits any new machine gun made after that date from being registered to a civillian. The only transferable machine guns are the ones made prior to 1986, they require an extensive back ground check by the BATFE, fingerprints, photos and sign off from your local chief of police in order to buy, not to mention a $200 transfer tax. The typical machinegun is also priced in a range similiar to the typical new car. That's what makes events like this so special. It's a chance for the average person to have fun trying out something they might otherwise never get the chance to.
- Adam Wells, Manchester

Grace Karposky, please show me your stats to back up this statement - "...yet the majority of American's want strict gun control. "

"I love all the civilians who think machine guns will protect them from the government's bombs and tanks. Hysterical."

Ever heard of guerilla warfare...check it out it's happening right now, and our troops are right in the middle of it.
- Dave, Auburn

God, guns, and gays all over again! It's how the gop garners votes. It is unfortunate that Mr. Thibodeau couldn' t find a way of rolling this trifecta of republican electioneering tenets into a single event. I'm sure that the other two cornerstones will be well covered over the course of the next 15 months however.

that being said; none of these machine guns would be legal if Prez Bush had re-affirmed the assault weapons ban a few years back as he promised he would when he was a candidate in 1999.

But hey, he's the decider.

anyone that believes in the first amendment should also support the second. It isnt moderate or the fringe right that are committing crimes with guns its the criminals the the dems left off to easy that are! And for anyone out therethat really doesnt know what the second amendment is all about its to protect us against terrorist foreign and domestic namely crazy left wingers as mike moore and the liikes!) god bless us and our firearms!!!!

If Jerry were to change this event to paintball guns and allow himself to be used as a target, I would buy a ticket. Yes, I would enjoy that.

Shooting in a protected area seems an OK sport to me, even with automatic weapons. But westener civilizations are slayed with aggression repression, which may lead to personal amok or violence. As (legal) weapons are around in the US in high density, they are much easier to grab for a runaway violent actor. Therefrom, the murder rate in the US by shooting exceeds the rest of the world by orders of magnitude.
In such a sense I would support such events as they open an opportunity to get rid of natural aggressive feelings in a safe way, but PLEASE leave these weapons there in a safe, do NOT take them home as you cannot protect them 100% from misuse.
Also, I cannot believe that firearms in private property can help to stop an amok government these days. Weapons are the internet, media and other intelligence institutions, sorry, you cannot shoot these. That was a good idea these former days, but that's outdated.
- Klaus Raedecke, Ruesselsheim, Germany

God Bless the United States of America and the State of New Hampshire. There are few places in the world where something like this can happen.

Mr. Pappas, allow me to state the obvious. There are bad people and good people. Bad people with guns is bad. Good people with guns is good. Class 3 firearms are so regulated that ONLY good people can own them. There have been relatively zero crimes committed with lawfully-owned machine guns since 1934 when NFA was enacted. Stop painting all gun owners as violent criminals. If you got out and talked to us, you would find that we are quite the opposite.
- Paul DiMarco, Londonderry, NH

Having a firing range at a fundraiser has nothing to with violence. This does not promote people to comit acts of violence. That would be the same as the fourth of July fire works giving people the idea to comment a violent act. This will be a well organized function. I do not really think they are going to hand out machine guns and not create a safe area for such use. I am glad to read that most people do not have a problem with this. But I am not surprised to read from the usual liberal people who see evrything thru rose colored glasses.
- J. P. Monty, Manchester

This is blatant disrespect towards all the victims of gun violence in NH. Insensitive and immature. I noticed that the Union Leader is manipulating the order of the reader's comments by printing all the pro gun comments first to support your position on the right to bear arms. What is the purpose of a machine gun? I don't think the founding fathers were thinking of fundraising when they were writing the Constitution. Are you going to give background checks to all attendees? Your plan might backfire on you. If you need to prove you have testosterone why don't you go buy some Viagra. You can get a free sample. Maybe you can have a Viagrafest fundraiser.
- stephen rowe, rochester

Chris Pappas, you just don't get it. And that's your problem
- A Wise, Auburn

As described, this event will be a LEGAL activity, with LEGAL products, held at a LEGAL and SAFE facilty, attended by LAW ABIDING people, supervised by multiple Range Officers that have the primary role of maintaining SAFETY. The only issue for discussion should be if there will be enough parking avaiable. This event will not glorify "gun violence", it will highlight gun safety! Placing a firearm into the hands of person does not cause that person to go insane and start shooting everything in sight. I contend that many people who fear firearms, and the thought of law abiding people carrying them, do so because of their own shortcomings. They can not imagine themselves having to take the personal responsibility to NOT do something illegal or stupid with a firearm. Since they don't trust themselves to control a firearm, how could anyone else possibly be trusted. Especially a person that likely voted for President Bush.
- Daniel Shepardson, Keene

Thank you to the Union Leader for presenting this in a neutral light, most media outlets would be wringing their hands & decrying the "glorification of guns". My kudos to your staff.

And kudos to the local Republican organization. What a wonderful way to bring everyone together for a day of fun and fun(d-raising)!

And, lastly, a resounding strawberry to Mr. Pappas. Ms. Simmons said that "...(his comments) only shows his lack of knowledge of the shooting sports" I have to disagree with that, I believe that it's just pure political posturing.

Anyway, thank you for allowing me to express my opinion. And thanx again to the Union Leader for showing some leadership in their excellent handling of the reporting of this event!
- Brian Davis, Indianapolis IN

Perhaps the stereotypes of Democrats not having a brain as well as Republicans not having a heart do not always prove to be true. In the midst of what the nation is enduring during our time of war and economic troubles, as well as the violent wave in Manchester, why shouldn't political leaders, those representing us, partake in activities we are familiar with- be it hunting or recreational shooting (this is NH folks, not NYC), happy hour, and various family events. Maybe we can start to see politicians in a more relative light, rather than cheating, drug and alcohol abusing, fraudulent individuals we have come to know over time. I grew up with in a military home in a small town. We had guns in the house and we knew how to use them. Maybe some gun and firearm knowledge and education is what our state needs to help curve the violent outbreak we are enduring.
- Beth, Derry, NH

For those who are interested in attending this event, please contact Kelly Hurst at 623-3011 or visit the MRC website at www.manchestergop.com. Hope to see you there!!
- Tammy Simmons, Manchester, NH

So will they be using the Mexican or gay paper targets?
- Tim Hamlett, Jacksonville

An invitation needs to be sent to the Democrats in order they learn how to shoot properly. It is just a matter of time when we will be under marshall law and may have to defend ourselves from the tyrannical Bush Administration.
- Lena Lobenstein, Hurricane Ridge, WA

When are you people going to stop repeating NRA talking points and do some research? Have any of you been to college? If not, I suggest that you take a critical thinking class. The correct information is out there, but you have to go beyond talking points to find it. Notice that the pro gun people post the loudest. ,yet the majority of American's want strict gun control. I love all the civilians who think machine guns will protect them from the government's bombs and tanks. Hysterical.
- Grace Karposky, Barrington

Bravo Manchester Republicans!

What a great opportunity for the dispelling of myths and misunderstandings about firearms and the true meaning of the Second Amendment.

The Second Amendment exists to ensure that the people will always be able to successfully contest a government which would use force to suppress rights. "Arms," then, at the writing of the constitution, as well as now, means "weapons of war."

New Hampshire's own constitution affirms the importance of the people being able to defend themselves from government run amok.

Detractors promote victimhood. How silly.

In addition to learning something about automatic firearms, those who attend the event will have a great time. Lots of noise. The fourth of July all over again.

Congratulations Jerry Thibodeau! A great idea. All smiles here!

Paul Mirski

Chris Pappas' hate speech against gun ownership and usage is completely unacceptable and he should be held accountable by the Manchester Democrats and removed from his position immediately.

How the democrats in Manchester can allow such bigotry to be displayed publicly in their names is truly beyond me. I was shocked to read his comments and to find that he apparently publicly represents the democrats.

One has to wonder why the democrats would allow this kind of hate speech to go on.

I fully support the idea of this fundraiser and I think the democrats in Manchester should launch an investigation into Pappas' comments and begin the process of issuing internal guidelines against hate speech against gun owners.
- Jim Lynch, Wilton

I find this article and much of the debate here amusing. One can simply show up at the counter at Manchester Firing Line range and rent a machine gun with little or no supervision for as long as the range is open. Many ranges have been carrying on organized shoots of privately owned machine guns for years. These are regisetered arms legally possessed under the National Firerams Act of 1934 (aka "Class 3 Firearms"). The would-be owners are carefully scrutinized by local law enforcement and the BATF before any lawful transfer of a machine gun can occur. In fact, legally possessed Class 3 firearms are associated in any criminal activity at a rate that is statistically ZERO. A moratorium of available machine guns was enacted in 1986 and because the value of these firearms has gradually increased to an astronomical level, the number of shoots has declined over the years. Still, they are fun, safe and educational for those in attendance. Good Job, Jerry!
- Bill Loginov, Londonderry

"Chris Pappas, the city Democratic party chairman, called the event 'not just in poor taste; it is downright offensive.'"

This sort of inability or unwillingness to distinguish between law abiding citizens and criminals, between those who work and strive from those who are content to sit back and get entitlements and other hand outs, between adults and children, that separates the two parties. One of the major reasons I and so many others moved here from Massachusetts has been in an effort to escape this sort of blindness.
- Ken M, Troy

I support law abiding citizens' right to be responsible gun owners, and to go to ranges and shoot off whatever type of weapon they like. I do not doubt that any city GOPer who would go to this event is nothing less than a law abiding citizen. I have a problem, however, with a political party encouraging people to use machine guns as a way to raise money, especially in a city like Manchester which has experienced a wave of violent crime. Have a bake sale or a car wash instead!
- Chris Pappas, Manchester

Maybe they can invite the last questioner from the CNN/YouTube Democratic debate on Monday night...Seems like it's just his (and misguided NH Republican's) kind of event.

Continue the great press coverage of this event...I hope we can get the national media involved too!
- Stephen, Portsmouth

Robert, you agree that people have the right to bear arms within the law. And yet you equate this event with criminals. Make up your mind.

As far as not attending, that is your right. It isn't for everyone. I wouldn't be attending a golf outing but I have nothing against them either. To each his own.
- Richard Scalzo, Epping, NH

I want to thank the Manchester GOP for putting on a fund raiser at the Pelham Fish & Game Club.

I am one father who has taught my wife and children how to shoot a rifle/hand gun, safety and how to protect themselves if needed.

NH residents should be proud that we support our second amendment rights as we have less crime than 48 other states and are one of the safest states to live in.

So stop the whining and go to your local shooting range and learn how guns do not kill it is the person behind the gun which is normally the criminal.

‘‘To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them...’’

- AL Baldasaro, Londonderry

I sure hope Dick Cheney can come to this event. Considering his skills with birdshot, imagine what he could do with an Uzi!
- D. Dexter, New Durham

The article regarding the gun event the Manchester GOP is holding was well done by the Union Leader and I thank you for your balanced coverage.
I think the response by Chris Pappas of the Manchester democrats was frightening. In his comments to the UL and later to Charlie Sherman on WGIR-AM, Chris Pappas tried to tie this to crime in Manchester. As though law abiding citizens exercising their right to free assembly and lawful activity are in the same category as those who would break our laws and trample on the rights of their fellow citizens. Pappas’ on air comments trying to weave this event into the death of Officer Briggs was the most disgusting and irresponsible statement I’ve heard in a long time. Any attempt to link law abiding citizens holding a lawful outing, doing lawful activities with an outlaw like the thug that gunned down Officer Briggs in cold blood, is the lowest form of politics I can imagine. The Manchester democrats continue to find new lows in gutter politics.

In response to CG from Derry who asks this question;

"the right to bear arms" has been taken completely out of context in this country....please tell me when a private citizen should be able to use a machine gun?

Let me answer by quoting Thomas Jefferson:

"The strongest reason for the people to retain their right to keep and bear arms
is a last resort to protect themselves against tyranny in government."

Obviously the founding fathers thought we the people should have protection against a tyrannical government therefore machine guns are a perfectly good tool to have (and perfectly legal by the way.)
- Dave, Tamworth

Statements from the mayor or the police chief never reduce crime. When average citizens stand up and say they've had enough and arm themselves, crime ALWAYS drops dramatically. It's been proven around the country and the world. Some truths are ageless. Our founding fathers knew it and it's GREAT to see the GOP beginning to turn in that direction.
- A. J. Alix, Windham

Wow - Looks like we should have a few people there on both sides of the isle.

My machine - guns only hurt paper and plastic! They're all legal, controlled, and safe in the right hands. Manchester Firing Line is the supplier, MFL has tought firearms safety-and has provided a safe place to shoot for over 15 years, and has over 800 active Members.

Come and have some safe fun!

Jim
- Jim McLoud, Manchester, NH

As one of the people who played a role in organizing this event, I am heartened by the enthusiastic comments readers have submitted. As for the "less than positive comments, they are instructive to the vast ignorance and antigun mindset that pervades society today. Chris Pappas, who's comments are nothing new or original, has equated every law-abiding citizen who owns guns as a nut job or criminal. People who are criticizing this event have likely never been around firearms, and get their information on TV. Truly objective people will attend the event, learn about the firearm and its history, shoot the firearms, and at the same time, expanded their breadth and depth of a significant part of American Military History.
- Rick Olson, Manchester

This is a Great Idea, Ill see you there!
There is nothing "extreme" about this, Recreational shooting has nothing to do with violence, and nothing to do with what party your affiliated with. People see or hear "guns" and they get paranoid, why are firearms so taboo? This country was freed and fed because of firearms.
- Cory Turner, Deerfield

I'm not saying they don't have a right to do it. I'm not saying they won't do it safely. However, I do have to say, this is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard.
- P. Lambert, Jaffrey

"I really tried to get Rudy Giuliani there," Thibodeau said. "Because I'll tell you, this is a guy that can't relax."
Nothing says relaxation like shooting an Uzi!?! Hello?? Seriously?!?!
Sounds like the Manchester Republican Committee is a bit out of touch.
- M.Ryan, Manchester

Just when I was planning a vacation to NH, I see this article. It makes me want to plan the trip to coincide with an event like this. I LOVE this idea, and would really like to be there. There is nothing like honoring the "Live Free or Die" motto. It is good to see some GOP leaders with the guts to host such an event.
- Troy LaPlante, Selma, NC

When there is violence raging in our society with people robbing and killing with illegal unregistered guns, it’s illogical to disarm the law abiding public, though this is the liberal knee jerk reaction. Why not a fund raiser at a gun shot?
- Jack Langley, Hollis

How sad that some people fear lawful Americans with old firearm technology going back to the 1880's and Hiram Maxim.

Over 1 million Americns own machine guns and yet you never hear of any problems with these lawful gun owners.

Further, it is sad to see just how ignorant many people are in their comments regarding firearms.

Have we all forgotten the Corp of Cadet in every American High School, such Cadets ARMED by the schools and woudl march under arms all over the cities of America.

King George III, Hitler, Stalin and Mao did not trust their peopel with guns either.

Do you?
- Don Schwarz, Stoughton, Mass

This is GREAT! Shooting is such a fun sport and to get to shoot Uzis, M-16 rifles and other automatic weapons for a day of target practice at a Pelham firing range is a wonderful opportunity. I never could understand why people are so afraid of guns. If the fearful would only give them a try they would better understand those of us who do enjoy the sport of shooting and would not be so afraid of guns. I grew up shooting and it definitely can be a family activity. More people need to be taught the proper handling of firearms. Treat them with respect, as you would any other tool.
- Paula K., Londonderry

What is the issue with shooting at a range in a safe environment? Why is this any different that a golf outing? The only difference is that golf is not a Constitutionally protected right, and knowing how to hit a golf ball will not protect you and your family.
- Gary Hoffman, Bedford

"My first and foremost goal is that everybody who walks in walks out," Thibodeau said.

That pretty much says it all, right?

Good luck to all the GOPers who attend this lofty and uplifting event. And I hope that no one is shot or maimed.

Oh, and by the way: will Dick Cheney be attending?
- Diane, Kearsarge

What are the Republicans in this state THINKING? Are they so desparate for money or attention that they would resort to an activity that would resound with only their most extreme right fringe? If this is their attempt is to attract supporters, it is very misguided. Haven't they even looked or reflected at the disastrous results of last November's elections. This is a big step in the wrong direction.
- Jon Marion, Manchester

What a great idea!
I believe strongly in ALL our rights, not just the ones approved by the ACLU, so I'll be there. If this offends our liberal neighbors, perhaps they should review the definition of "tolerance"
- Tom Dillon, Deerfield

I think Mr. Thibodeau might find shuddering on both sides of the poltiical aisle. This is not the image that Republicans want to put forward. The only part of his comments that I agree with would be "What the heck?".
- Tom Grinley, Bradford

How is this NOT a family event. And just what do the illicit use of firearms have to do with this event ? If that statment is true the we should end NASCAR, boxing and soccer now. As they must lead to violence and speeding! Oh and by the way machine guns do fall within the laws of this state and the country.....
- Chris Trickett, Auburn

What a great idea, maybe someone will bring some beer and a lawyer to shoot in the face. And if things go really well maybe there will be some towelheads there to torture.
- Don Kirlis, Candia

Chris Pappas's comments somehow correlating a sporting event like range shooting with crime only shows his lack of knowledge of the shooting sports. There is nothing offensive about a day at the range- regardless of whether it is part of a fundraiser or not.

I would think the members of Pelham Fish & Game - or any of the other many Fish & Game clubs in the area that have shooting ranges as part of their club, as well as private businesses like Manchester Firing Line, might be offended that Mr. Pappas thinks they are somehow linked with activities of criminals because they are involved in the shooting sports.
- Tammy Simmons, Manchester, NH

Thank you for atempting to turn a nation back into riflemen/women. I am a small arms expert, and would like to say remember to S.E.E. Safety, Education, Enjoy.
I wish I could be there myself but I am away.
- Derek Russo, Northwood

It would have been nice if Chris Pappas had simply said "Well, we live in a free country", because that is what having a machine gun shoot proves. Thank God that America is still proof that the people rule, and not the elites, who always take away guns first. As a popular bumper sticker says "Free men own guns, slaves don't".
- Mitchell McConnell, Brookline, NH

"we all have a little testosterone in us right?"
sounds like you could use some common sense as well...
"the right to bear arms" has been taken completely out of context in this country....please tell me when a private citizen should be able to use a machine gun?

you would think these political enthusiasts could come up with something more meaningful and productive then machine gun practice....as a NH resident & Republican, I am ebarrassed.
- CG, Derry

I think it's fantastic that Hurst and other women are taking an interest in firearms! I'll bet the machine gun shoot will be alot of fun! I'm looking forward to the day that I'll visit unionleader.com and see the headlines "Another City Rapist Shot Dead", rather than "Another City Woman Raped". As for Papas, the only thing unconscionable going on is the catch and release system of criminal justice being practiced by our left wing neighbors to the south. Then again, what do we expect from a state where the punishment for killing somebody while DUI is 45 years to life in the U.S. Senate.
- Adam Wells, Manchester

As for this Pelham fundraiser, I won't be attending. I am a Republican but I can't condone any fundraiser that includes a firing range. I will most agree that our city has had enough violence with guns of late and will not be part of it. People have a right to bear arms within the laws and regulations of our state and/or nation, I agree with that. I would much prefer to attend fundraisers that are more family-orientented. I do agree with Mr. Thibodeau in saying; "It's about people meeting people, Come on out and talk to those in the city." See you at the Sept. 16th rally at Veterans Park.
- Robert M Tarr, Manchester
