OK Gov. Lynch, it is time for you to show ALL of your constituents what you are made of. Pass it or veto it (I do not give a darn since it will not affect me) BUT do care if you do nothing. Taking the cowards path of letting it pass w/o your signature is unacceptable(and should be considered unacceptable to even the supporters of this legislation). Both sides make valid points and you have a DUTY to sign/veto it; you need to make a decision. You promised to veto it if your stipulations were not added; were they? If not veto, if so, pass--it is cut and dry. Then move on to our real issue (put this nonesense behind you) of the budget problem. What do you say Gov. Lynch, will you finally make a decision?
- Brian, Manchester

I'd rather live by the Constitution than Webster's Dictionary, the Bible or sacraments. I'd rather live by the Constitution than by what Jesus, your priests, or your "father" might have to say. If we base our laws on any of these definitions we might still have slavery and women would be subserviant to men. That might seem to be a good idea to some, for my part, I would rather live free or die. I'd rather live in a society that allows consenting adults to pursue happiness, than to pander to fearmongering or unrelated nonsensical comparisons to animals or children. What would be a very sad day for NH indeed would be to make law based on the religious beliefs of some. While I would defend the rights for people to believe in any religion or God they want to, I do not want someone else deciding what religious values I shall or should live by. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. I doubt anyone in NH qualifies to cast the first stone. Shall we begin by stoning all divorcees and adulterors?
- Troy, Boston, MA

I myself being a gay man am totally against this bill making passage. I pray that the Governor of this State has the ethical and moral conviction to not allow this to become law.
Marriage is one man and one woman ordained by God through the Sacrament of Matrimonry. End of discussion. There were no loop holes in that Sacrament. There are many legal ways a gay couple can seek to assure that their affairs are managed in the way they want them to. You don't need to ruin the intention of a Sacrament which it was created for!
- Gene, Allenstown

Russ in Warnock,
How about Democrats deal with the pressing budget and unemployment issues FIRST and pander to the rainbow coalition and Episcopal voters LATER.
- Jim, Manchester

Jesus would NOT have approved of this!!!
- Jim, Keene

This is an issue that will be legalized eventually, it is simply a matter of how long it will take. Anyone who denies this is not being reasonable. Our state and country have a lot of issues on our plate at the moment and we need to give people the equal rights they deserve so we can spend our time on other issues. I'm proud of NH for the steps that it has taken and I hope that this passes.
- Russ Warnock, New Boston

Gov. Lynch - please veto this bill and uphold Webster's definition of marriage: "The condition of being a husband or wife....". God ordained marriage between a man and a woman; regardless of what immoral laws are made.
- Don, Derry

To Michael from Manchester and others here: Sorry to burst your bubble, but this bill will not provide any federal benefits to married same sex couples. Nor will it be recognized in any other state that does not have a gay marriage law. Instead of all this brouhaha about NH marriage laws, proponents should be trying to get civil unions added to the U.S. Code to provide the same benefits as married couples, but leave alone the term "married". That's reserved for a man and a woman.
- Steve, Strafford

I'm up to speed on all the fears that have been accused, but weren't these same fears said of Massachusetts five years ago?

Last time I checked it was the responsibility of the person making an accusation to prove what they accuse. I have seen no proof that allowing gay people to marry harms or even inconveniences anyone. If anyone can give me solid proof and not hearsay I am willing to listen. Until then I say "Live Free or Die".
- John Hosty-Grinnell, Salem, NH

I think we need to listen to the opinions of the leader of the Republican Party and see what his opinion is on this matter.'

So I will listen to Rush Limbaugh tomorrow and see what this thrice divorced and chlidless man has to say.

That is if he's not on his way to the Dominican Republic with a suitcase full of Via*ra.

Relax all you rightwing folks. Vermont is still intact and so is Mass.

NH will survive too.
- GregB, Milford

To Marc in Nashua and others who think that the civil union should be enough:

Civil unions do not allow the same benefits as civil marriage. Medical benefits, taxes, visitation, car insurance, etc. are all matters that are affected here.

Did you know that you get a DISCOUNT for being civil married? You don't get a discount for being civil unioned.
- Michael, Manchester

Wise decision by the senate. About time we stop treating our gay and lesbian population as second class citizens because some of us think that religion should dictate our lives.

This country was not founded on God or religion, we have separation of church and state, and yet the only arguments against gay marriage are that of the religious.

Sorry to say, but they are invalid arguments, since religion has no deciding factor in this situation.

Let's hope our governor is smart enough to sign this bill into law. We're one step closer to ending unjustified hate and discrimination, and giving our people the rights they deserve.
- Joseph, Amherst

Anyone who brings religion into this argument should read the article again. The bill legalizes civil marriage not religious marriage. If your church doesn't want to perform a gay marriage, they don't have to. The bill just gives all people a legally equal marriage. If you're opposed to this bill, go to hell and take your "god" with you. He's no god of mine
- John, Auburn

"Anybody who supports gay marriage on civil rights grounds, but opposes giving equal rights to those who seek plural marriage, is a hypocrite."

This is completely false. Polygamy is a system of oppression. Any region or religion of the world which endorses it (i.e. Africa, the Middle East) or has in the past is also notorious for oppressing women and forcing them into such marriages at young ages. Homosexuals who wish to marry do so as consenting adults. The two are not the same in any way.
- Charles, Manchester

So New Hampshire is on the verge of legally recognizing marriage for gays and lesbians. Do most people understand the ramifications and reason for this bill? I think most do not understand the significance or understand the legal issues.

As of right now, New Hampshire recognizes Civil Unions for gay and lesbian couples. This gives these unions legal status much like marriage while they reside in New Hampshire. Once they move to another state, their union more than likely will not be recognized unless that state also recognizes civil unions.

First, once a marriage license is issued by a New Hampshire city or town, this document becomes a legal document that allows couples recognition of their marriage in other states. This means that our law will have legal implications beyond our borders. This would be like Vermont recognizing plural marriage (multiple partners) and the polygamist couples move to New Hampshire and we are forced to recognize their marriage.

Regardless of how you feel about this issue, the bottom line is that because of the legal implications, this is NOT a state issue. This is a federal issue. Until the Federal Government recognizes marriage between gay and lesbian couples, we are just wasting time.
- Bob Hill, Concord NH

This Country was founded by men of deep faith, and knew the bennifit of Gods guidance. There are many rules God requires us to follow, from 'do not lie with your neighbours wife, brothers wife, daughter-in-law...., and yes, Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womenkind: it is abomination. It is our duty to call Gov. Lynch 603-271-2121 and ask him to veto this.
- Richard, Londonderry

I believe that people who approve of gay marriage misunderstand what marriage truly is and how it affects society. Marriage is not all about love, it involves a biological union and the nurturing of children generation to generation (a true natural process).
After you study the "Theology of the Body", then tell me "marriage" is ok for gay couples. It simply is not, live as you wish (yes, I agree times have changed), but redefining a cornerstone of human existance is plain wrong and disasterous for the great good of society, not to mention, against God' law. Somethings should not be changed!
- Christine Duffley, Manchester

The bill, amended on the Senate floor, draws a distinction between civil and religious marriage, and says that any two individuals have a right to join together in a civil marriage.

NOT BY GODS STANDARDS IT DOESN'T!
and not by mine either. This truly sickens me. What a slap in the face I am so disappointment in my state legislation.
I will not be voting for any of you in the near future. SHAME on all of you!
- Debby, Manchester NH

Polls show that about 55% of New Hampshire citizens support this, and that's about the same as the Senate vote, so it appears that the majority ruled and democracy is alive and well. If the polls were wrong, then some of these senators will lose their next election, and democracy will still be alive and well. Senators said they communicated with their constituents to find out what the people wanted rather than voting for their individual preference. Polls in NH reflect changes all over the country, so it's not Mass. and NY people moving here that is changing the public personality of the state, the people already here are changing.
Personally, I don't care who gets married as long as it isn't me.
- Brian, W. Manch

As I read all the post on this topic, I find it ironic that the people who plead loudest for tolerance are the most intolerant. They use words like bigot, homophobes, redneck ect. to identify those who are opposed to gay marriage.

As a father of two girls, I accept that one or both may turn out to be gay. If that is the case I will love them no less. If their partner is a loving person who treats my daughter well, I will welcome them in our lives and love them as well.

But I believe that the bond of marriage is a special bond between one man and one woman. I don't hate anybody, and I hope that everyone finds a life partner regardless of sexual orientation.
- Billy, Derry

Anybody who supports gay marriage on civil rights grounds, but opposes giving equal rights to those who seek plural marriage, is a hypocrite.
- Dwayne, Bedford

I am truly proud of NH today. I never thought for a second that this bill would pass. It did and I am proud to be a resident of this great state which is not afraid to embrace differences and love. over hate and segregation.

To everyone here who has posted a comment based in fear and hidden behind that fear, I challenge you to think with love in your heart. This is not a religious issue, it is s a civil one. But if you insist on bringing religion into the conversation, aren't religious values based in love and not hate? That's what I was taught.

I challenge you to practice some acceptance of those different than you. The truth is those of us who have listened to you promote your values have practiced tolerance and love...not hate and accepted you as different.

It's time to actually listen to one another and hear what each other is saying.

Congratulations, NH. Sign the bill Governor Lynch. It's the right thing to do.
- Kim, Canaan,Nh

To all of those opposed to this law: Other than religious reasons, why are you against it? What is it taking away from you? What harm is it going to cause? And for those whom are against it for religious reasons, don't you think your God would want to share and spread love? If you are born gay, didn't God make you that way? and don't give me the "your not born to be gay, you choose it" bs.
- Christopher Collins, Newton

I can't express the depth of my disappointment in the NH legislature for passing this bill. We already had a civil union law that provided the state rights and benefits of married heteros to gay couples. Marriage, as defined by the federal government is between a man and a woman, and this bill will do nothing to change that definition. That means that gay couples still cannot file their federal income tax as "married", nor will they be eligible for any federal survivor's benefits. This bill is nothing more than spineless legislators caving in to a very vocal minority.
- Steve, Strafford

It is a true shame that the supporters of gay marriage were able to impose what they see as their politically correct agenda on all the citizens of this state – human history, culture and moral principles not-withstanding.

This law is insulting to all who have entered the authentic, sacred and time-honored institution of marriage over the years.
- Michael, Nashua

Today marks a great day for the State of NH and for the United States. The tides are turning in this latest civil rights movement, and we are, yet again, a step closer towards gay marriage recognition on the federal level. NH is at the forefront of what will happen soon on the Federal level regardless of Lynch's decision. Lynch should sign the bill into law and take this country one step closer to equality.

For all those who are against gay marriage, what's it to you? Gay couples are fighting for their rights, and you are fighting to take away their rights. How would you feel if gays fought (successfully to take away some of your civil rights? your religion? your right to a fair trial? Or what if we put your civil rights up for vote in a referendum, and they were retracted? It might be popular to force all Mormons to be Catholics, but does that mean Mormonism should be outlawed? You would never allow anyone else to dictate how you live your life, so why are you trying to dictate the way others live theirs? Shame on you.
- David, Londonderry

This is a sad day for the State of New Hampshire. Marriage is and always should be the union of one man and one woman. I hope that the governor does the right thing and vetoes this law.
- Michael, Nashua

Jesus would have voted for this legislation.
- Ann Hebert, Dover, NH

I could not be more proud of my home state. Thank you, Senate, for supporting equal rights for people of all sexual orientations!
- Eric, Hampstead

We spend our legislative time on gay marriage and transgender bathroom usage!! How about tackling some real issues that matter to the majority not the minority like creating jobs or education? I say this not because I am anti gay or anti anyone else. It’s because with all of the pressing issues today this is where we’ve ended up. 1st it was we need civil union legislation to protect people’s rights and so everyone could have insurance and other benefits etc…. I think most people were for that because it’s the right thing to do. I know I was. Now we need to call it marriage because a man and a woman shouldn’t have something a gay couple can’t have. Well guess what… Last I checked gay couples can’t have kids (you know what I’m saying) so what’s next are we going to tell God he screwed up and 2 men or 2 women should be able to get pregnant? Tell me what law fixes that?
Gay couples are different from heterosexual couples no matter how liberal you are or how you make your argument. There is no hate or fear in that statement just fact. Why can’t people just admit that it’s different and be happy with civil unions? Isn’t the recognition and benefits what is really important? Key point Gay marriage will never be the same as straight marriage because of the reason stated above. So why do we call it marriage?
- brian, hooksett

What I am most interested in and will watch intently is the Pandora’s Box yet to be opened when a homosexual couple files for divorce in the state of New Hampshire. The New Hampshire courts are so quick to persecute men for simply being men that the State’s Marital Masters will have no idea which partner to discriminate against. If nothing else, it will be interesting to see what judgments come out of our state’s divorce courts with regard to same sex divorces. Who gets the adopted kid or kids, who gets the house, who gets the dog, and most importantly who gets paid? Same sex couples will find out what divorced New Hampshire men have always known and that is equality in divorce is a pipe dream that will never be realized in New Hampshire.
New Hampshire divorce lawyers are going to be so happy if Governor Lynch passes this bill as they will have a whole new pool of clients to exploit for cash.
- Jeff, Manchester

I am immensely proud of my home state today. New Hampshire has always celebrated independence and a lack of government interference in the private lives of its citizens. The state Senate understood that tradition today and voted to allow hard working taxpayers to be treated equally under the law without government sanction. The Union Leader and an ever-smaller group of readers and constituents who still subscribe to its out-of-touch ideology will arguably condemn today's vote, but the rest of fair-minded Granite Staters will almost certainly understand their state is now on the right side of history. Kudos!
- Michael K. Lavers, Brooklyn, NY

All the anit-Bushanites(tm), who installed this left wing bureaucracy in NH, slipped one by the silent majority of flinty GOPers that dominate this state. This will NOT be allowed to continue. It will NOT be tolerated. Mark my words, you have now riled the ire of NH Republicans.

Me, I'm a Republican. I don't care about "teh gheys" or how they choose to live their lives. I choose not to know and don't spend any time thinking about it. I'm about limited government and living without constant regulation and legislation.

The current Democratic legislature seems hell-bent on leaving behind their "legacy." We're creating laws about laws and then some more laws to clarify other existing laws. Those are the things that I find irksome about the state of the State. A nanny state. Live free of what??
- AJB, Nottingham

This is a sad day for the future of our children. Not only are they being saddled with incredible debt but all moral values are being stripped from them. They will have nothing to look up to, nothing to hope for, nothing to give their children but deceit and lies. The minority has won. May God grant Governor Lynch wisdom when this bill hits his desk! He has the opportunity to redirect the insanity our lawmakers have given the great state of New Hampshire.
- Barbara, Rochester

Thank you Jennifer from Manchester for your eloquent argument! I would encourage all of the supporters out there to contact the Governor, and tell him to support equality for all NH citizens! 603-271-2121

Live Free or Die! Today is a day to love New Hampshire and our democracy! Protection of minorities and embracing diversity is what this State is all about!
- Joseph, Manchester

Civil rights has nothing to do w/sex. It has to do w/recognizing a human being as just that - a human being. Sex is not a race or ethnicity. How did this topic get cloaked in civil rights? God forgive us.
- Vicki, Manchester

Any day we can pass medical marijuana and gay marriage and kill (table) seat belts and the four year term for governor has to rank as one of the happiest ever for true libertarians like me. I'm happy, sad only because smoke and mirrors and absolute bigotry killed the transgender bill by unanimity. It seems Dem Senators cut a deal. We'll take gay marriage but transgendered is a step too far. I used to think gays would be the last segment of society to receive equal rights. I was wrong. Transgendered people remain in the back of the bus, but fear not. No society is just until all are treated equally, and I for one will redouble my efforts to help this one segment of society.

Steve V (Kathy the S's favorite Ward 8 Rep)
- steve vaillancourt, manchester

Thanks for listing the Governor's office number. I just called and asked his staff to convey my wish that he either sign it or let it take effect without his signature.

I think this was the right thing to do and Governor Lynch will hopefully do the decent thing. Gays pay the same taxes as the rest of us and should have the same access to marriage.

And sorry but religion is irrelevant since this is a civil marriage we are talking about not a religious one. This law does not force religious institutions to perform gay marriages or recognize them in any way whatsoever.

So come on Governor Lynch, please do the right thing and either sign the bill or let it take effect without your signature. A veto would be unthinkable.

And no, I'm not a "liberal." I am quite conservative on guns, taxes and small government. I'm a life member of the NRA and a member of the Gun Owner's of America.

I believe we can have gun rights and gay rights, as well as small government. Individual liberty is what this country is all about and gay people deserve it as much as straight people.
- Bob Thornton, Milford

Excellent. I don't agree with the idea of marriage requiring government approval in the first place, but as long as that's the way it is, the fewer restrictions the better.
- R.P., Kingston

The legislators are finally listening to the vast majority and not to the small but vocal minority. Most people who truly examine their beliefs no longer believe in the politics of ignorance. Fear-mongering leads only to divisiveness, bigotry and worse. Today I am a proud citizen of NH. Come on, Governor. Stand up in public for what you truly believe.
- Annie, Manchester

To all those opposed... Yes... that's what "the gays" are doing. Shoving "it" down your throat... just like the black people who wanted to see slavery abolished and the women who wanted the right to vote. The very fiber of America has CERTAINLY been irreparably damaged by THOSE decisions, so we had better halt freedom and equality right in their tracks before any more damage is done!

Your fear sickens me. Where does one begin to pull your arguements apart? There are so many freyed egdes from which to choose, starting with the fact that no one asks you to hide the color of your skin, or your gender, or the crucifix around your neck, or your "my kid is an honor roll student" bumper stickers. Every day each of us is faced with both the natural existence of, as well as the belief systems of, people who are different from ourselves. That you choose to so vehemently fight against any number of them reveals not only your shameful ignorance, but the unhappiness that you must feel in your own life so as to be so accutely focused on what you deem to be unacceptable differences in others. How small and insignificant you must feel. How little faith you must have in yourself. I pity you.

Homosexuals are not destroying America's families. HATE is destroying America's, which means YOU are destroying America's families. Pull yourself together and rejoin Humanity. There may actually be some of us here who miss you.
- Jennifer, Manchester

My fiancee' is black and I am white. At one time we would not be allowed to be seen together, never mind date or marry. It never fails to amaze me that in the year 2009 that such bigotry still exists. There should not even be a discussion or waste of time and energy on weather two consenting adults can marry. Live free or die should mean just that. Free to live your life as you chose as long as what you do brings no harm to others.
- Kimba, Manchester, NH

If you don't agree with this please call Gov. Lynch and tell him that you want him to VETO the bill. Tell him that you want marriage to remain between one man and one woman. We don't want him to just let it go through without his signature we want him to STOP IT!!
Please call him at 603-271-2121
- Lindsey, Manchester, nh

I just want to say as a conservative. That the Republicans who are saying our freedoms are being taken away by Obama (whether or not true), lose all credibility when they stand ignorantly against gay marriage and legalization of marijuana. You're opinion is not backed by facts. It is just that...An opinion. America does not run solely off of opinions.

If you want to be critical of democrats or of any group of people you are welcome to do so, this is America...for now. But be responsible and respectable enough to criticize your own group.
- Kyle, Manchester

This is not your Grandparents New Hampshire.
You wanted a Blue State government, you got it.
- Tim, Nashua

Has anyone ever heard of seperation of church and state. This should have nothing to do with religion. Today is a good day in NH
- Joe, Manchester

HORRIFIC DAY FOR NH! I'm shocked our legislators left their morals in the toilet and voted for this bill.

Our values, or what few we have left, has been based on God's word. Whether you are "religious" or not, you have values ingrained within you that are based on Christian values. NONE OF WHICH ARE TRANSGENDER OR GAY!

This is disgusting.
- mandee, windham

I'm so proud to be a citizen of New Hampshire today. To those bigots out there opposed to this, please just stop and think for a minute. What effect does this have on your life or marriage? Absolutely none.
- Frank, Dover

well there goes the neighborhood. get married all you want... still wont get into heaven. no government can pass that bill.
- Nick, Manchester

To the sponsors of HB 436, New Hampshire Freedom to Marry, the House and Senate, THANK YOU.
- Greg Sargent, Manchester, NH

Thank you NH!!! Live Free or Die!
- John, Manchester

I called my reps and supported this bill. I hope you people that pushed for this bill remember us when they try and infringe on our 2nd amendment rights. By the way, congrats.
- David Parent, Manchester

I have always thought "marriage" should be between a man and a woman. But I have come to realize that whether a gay couple are just living together, have a civil union, or a marriage makes absolutely no difference in my life. What people do is their own business. And I am old enough to remember the taboo's on inter-racial marriage too. That never had any effect on my life either. So I guess I have no real reason to object.
- BC, Salem

Gay people are scary because they're different.
- JB, NB, NH

Next up, banning homeschooling, more "hate crimes" laws if you defend yourself against someone of a protected race who attacks you in your home, raised taxes, gun control.

Either that, or a backlash like they've never seen. Which will it be, those of us who still believe in what New Hampshire was, not Mass Failure 2?

When are we going to take it back?
- John Sandler, Merrimack

Agreed--- this is not a matter of "if" but of "when." Like Bob dylan said, for the times they are a changing...
- Sarah, Manchester

Yeah NH!!! I can't believe that my home state is going to beat out CA on this issue. I guess I will have to move back!

Thank you to our legislators who did the RIGHT thing! Society benefits when all people are treated EQUALLY, and we embrace DIVERSITY!

Live FREE or DIE!!
- Joseph, San Francisco, CA

What this bill does that civil unions does not is establish equality under the law. A marriage is recognized when, for example, traveling overseas. A civil union is not. If and when the federal government recognizes marriage equality, there are over seven thousand legal benefits recognized for married couples, not for civilly united couples. That equality is what fair-minded New Hampshire citizens support.
- Peter, Canterbury

LOL!! Now all we need to make this day perfect is a Sales Tax, Income Tax, reverse Addison's sentence, revote the 'Bathroom Bill' and outlaw the Republican Party.

I now await the first challange to the notion of one wife only in a marriage. 60% of the worlds population practices the rule of being able to keep multiple wives. It is a practice that is far older than monogamy.

Be careful what you wish for, you may not like what you get.
- Gene, Hooksett

When marriage means everything goes, then it ends up meaning nothing at all. In time as more and more various types of relationships and groupings come under that title, it will be nothing more than piece of paper in an old draw. Marriage has always been the foundation of family and family the foundation of society. When it's gone...then what is left?
- John, Newmarket

Equal under the law only-- but not equal.
- Steve, Provincetown, ma

Again, where is this state headed. I hope the Governor veto's it.
- Bpb, Brookline

This is great news. I hope governor Lynch either signs the bill or lets it pass into law without his signature.
- Dan, Manchester

OK so the republican minority are homophobes. Time or rather the next couple of elections will change this when they are voted out of office. This is a great beginning for NH.
- Bill, Merrimack

I am immensely proud to be a citizen of this state. I accept my gay neighbors and friends as human beings, just as I do my heterosexual friends. Go NH! Sign it, Governor Lynch!
- Frank, Canaan

What does this watered down bill give gays that the Civil union bill didn't?

A reason to rub themselves in the public's face again? They would have more clout with the moderates and even conservatives if they didn't make such a fuss over everything and accept this victory in quiet dignity.
- Marc, Nashua

Mike From Manchester:

You talk about being sick of having other peoples morals crammed down your throat (that don't effect you personally at all) and then you proceed to try and cram your beliefs and morals down every readers throat. Hypocrisy at its finest.
- Dan, Wilton

This is a sad day for NH and to be honest social values that have existed for thousands of years have just been thrown out the window here in NH.

I personally would like to know the names of those in my district who voted for this insanity so I can do my part to make sure they don't get re-elected.

Pathetic this state is becoming more and more like Massachusetts every day. Actually it's very scary. What's next throwing out traditional marriage?

To all those who have voted and supported this nonsense they have lost any credible respect and will probably loose their political platforms/seats. I hope they do.

Also to all those in favor of this. Look, I don't want nor do I need anybody throwing your sexual preferences shoved in my face. All I hear is your lack of civil rights. You're luck you live in the US where you have all the civil rights you could dream of. Then, selfishly enough, you fought for civil unions and got them and now you fought for this and have it. Temporarily. Remember what's here today can be taken away tomorrow. I say politicians should stay out of the gay marriage issue and let the citizens of NH decide. If that's the case...you'll see this get shot down so fast. Trust me these politicians in Concord are NOT acting on our behalf people. We elected them and we need to tell them these laws should not be passed. Clear and simple.

I only hope Gov Lynch veto's this otherwise, it's petitioning to have this law abolished in addition to those who passed it in Concord.
- Kristin P, Derry, NH

I am sick and tired of the government trying to cram other people's morals down our throats, too. For once, they didn't do so. The government should only be in the business of civil marriages and anyone who wants to marry anyone in a civil ceremony should be allowed. Let each church/religion decide for themselves if they want to allow same-sex religious marriages. That way everyone is free to decide. Good for NH. Sign the bill, Governor Lynch.
- Matt, Manchester

I am so proud to live in a state that recoginzes equal rights for all humans! I am a straight, married mother of two and I believe that noone has the right to tell someone who they can and cannot love, marry and be with for their life. No one told me whether or not I could marry my husband, nor should anyone be able to tell someone else the same. A major victory!
- Lauren, Manchester, NH

Lawyers just increased the opportunity for more divorce cases.

This isn't about equality, it's about lawyers having more business.

Child custody, child support, property, alimony,etc..... you all know the drill.

Don't know why this never made it on to a ballot for the people to vote on it.
- Harry, Atkinson

That popping sound you hear is heads exploding at the Union Leader.
- Bill, Londonderry

A great day for all citizens of NH! "Live Free or Die" will apply to all the states' citizens and not to just those that lean to the left. I am very proud of all that voted for the passing of this and sincerely hope that the Governor decides to look past his personal views (as I am fairly certain he will) and sign into law a bill that gives equal rights ... not separate or special... but equal rights to all the citizens of this state. I am very proud to be a New Hampshire native.
- Kevin, Litchfield

Slouching toward Gomorrah: What’s next Man-Boy love, legalizing heroin. On Demand Abortions anytime
- Gary, Amherst

Once again the legislature has declared that God is dead. I will pray for you all.
- Joseph, Manchester

I'm getting really sick of all the people with their religion. If "Marriage" is religious and only between a man and a woman, the state shouldn't be in the business of issuing them. They should only be allowed to do civil unions for any couple and leave "marriage" to a church.

People won't cram their gay marriage down your throat when you stop cramming your religion down theirs.
- Travis, Hillsborough, NH

I'm so proud of New Hampshire today.
- Kerri P., Nashua

I have never been prouder to be a New Hampshire citizen than I am right now. Thank you, Senators, for listening to your constituents and voting to extend equal marriage rights to all couples.
- Dan, Manchester

Lol, governor Braveheart Lynch will now have to sign this into law, veto it, or let it pass without signing it.....either way he has to make some kind of choice. Oh the horror of it all.....the horror, lol. He has to stand up, finally.....in some way, and lead.
- Jay Collins, Laconia

I agree that all couples are entitled to the same benefits and protections under state law - isn't that where this fight began? Well, gay couples received those protections last year under the civil union legislation. The push for the term "marriage" to be applied to the same exact union that they already hold seems like a childish and petty temper tantrum because they have been told "no" in the past.
This is a slippery slope .... the transgender bill failed today, but how long until we are told that "it's not a matter of if, it's when" and that "we should just catch up" - think about it in that regard when your child or teen daughter is in the bathroom with men who are "sexually confused" because we need to be socially progressive and morally lax.
- Shannon, Manchester

Whats the next small interest group to make noise?
- Mary, Claremont, NH

This decision reflects complete stupidity and is based on people's fears to do the right thing, to oppose it.

Think of it logically..if the whole world were made up of same sex relationships, there'd be no more humans.....duh, you mean to tell me that is natural and right????
- Nancy, Dunbarton

Yeaaaahhhh! I am more proud of this state today than ever before. Those of you who find it sick and perverse or disgusting...on what exactly do you base that opinion? My guess, your bible or the adults in your life told you so. But your bible is not law, it is YOUR religion.

This NH Native is thrilled to be in a state that recognizes civil rights should not be awarded based on religious principles.

Whoo Hooo!
- Cheryl, Derry, NH

I'm proud to be a citizen of one of the few states that has acted quickly and responsibly, and to be one of the forerunners for respecting and equalizing people, regardless of their sexual orientation.

For all those that say it's a sad day for NH...it's truly sad that you cannot respect people for being what they are, people.
- Ehrin, Manchester

Younger people are only more adapted to it because we've seen it more in our lives. Older people haven't seen it and shame shame on it. This is like Exeter High School's focus on dirty dancing instead of the real problem of alcohol and drugs. We were raised watching the dancing, we don't shame against same sex marriage for the same reason. I say GOOD for NH and for everyone that keeps saying dumb things like "since when did we become Mass," I simply say pull you're head out and watch what is going on.
- Liz, Exeter

How would gay marriage lead to dissolution of traditional family life and societal norms any more than the current divorce rate?
- Bob, Nashua, NH

What is right and what is wrong must be based upon some standard. The standard upon which this society was based is the Bible. Based upon the truths found in the Word of God, the vote to allow gay marriage (so-called) was not the right thing to do.
- Elena Chevalier, Benton

The right thing in the right time. Let the religious institutions make rules for themselves and let others live under the rules for all of the citizenry. I'm proud to be from NH. "Live Free!"
- Tom, Durtham/NH

Marriage is between a man and a women simple as that!!

I am sick of our government trying to cram other people's morales down my throat. I have no problem with people being gay, I personally have Gay friends but the word marriage is a union between man and women as defined in all Holy Books which all of our laws and morales are founded from!!

This is a mute topic because I personally believe that our Government shouldn't even be involved with anything to do with Marriage. Just another step toward the Left for New Hampshire!!
- Mike, Manchester

I too am proud of our elected officials who did the right thing! Thank you for listening!
- Audrey, Nashua

Everyone better go to their church, temple or mosque and apologize.

This is disgusting. I am so ashamed of my state, that this special rights for depravity was allowed to pass.

It will stand for a time in the laws of men, but talk about being judged harshly...
- Mike R., Bedford

I could not be prouder of New Hampshire. We can now look forward to this corner of the United States to lead the way on human rights and to be an example for the rest of the nation. As for the idea that this is due to people from Massachusetts moving to New Hampshire, that’s ridiculous. My partner I moved here from San Francisco! No one gets keep the kind of state they remember from childhood, my native California was overrun from people from all over this nation until it was too crowed and expensive to stay. Fortunately I have found a new and wonderful home here. Thank you senators!
- Dennis C, Fremont

Hooray for NH. Im sure this will make all the local redneck repubs sick. Who really cares.........they are a dying breed.
- Jake, Manchester

Transgenders have to use the bathrooms they were born with, people with terminal illness get relief, and the homosexual community can get married. I don't think this day can get any better if we tried. Just because you live in a world with blinders, doesn't mean everyone else does, and today proves it. Times have changed from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s and now, their changing to reflect the current day.
- Bill, Manchester

Bad Day for NH.
- steve, nashua

What sick and perverse legislation is this?

We need to remove these reps and pass a constitutional amendment.
- Pete Cardi, Hanover

I've constantly wondered why my 28 year relationship is so threatening to those who oppose gay marriage. We own our home, pay taxes, perform charitable works in our community, took care of two sets of elderly parents until they died, love our animals, are good neighbors, and treat everyone with respect.

I'm thrilled that the State has finally given us the ability to have our relationship given formal acceptance under the law.
- ML, Manchester

Very sad day for NH.
- SLH, Mont Vernon

This is a simple, practical bill, and a good job by the senate in passing it! Government involvement in marriage or other aspects of private life that does not impact others should be as light as reasonably possible, and removing government limitations on marriage certainly furthers that goal.
- Peter, Canterbury

Poor Joe McQuaid must be in tears
- Cynthia, Goffstown

To quote the great man, "Free at last, Free at last, thank God Almighty we are free at last."

The next hurdle is if Lynch will suddenly develop a spine and either sign the bill into law, or simply allow it to become law sans signature - either way is acceptable.

Those who oppose this and think the sky will fall, and God will strike us down like Sodom and Gamorrah - Get real - the biggest threat to "traditional, heterosexual marriage" is TRADITIONAL HETEROSEXUAL DIVORCE!

Society will not crumble into a sea of sin -rather - those of us deemed second class citizens by you "normal" folk will now have the SAME rights you enjoy. Not a special right, the SAME right.

And, thanks to our style of government and our levels of freedom - if you are against same-sex marriage - DON'T HAVE ONE!

I hope the Governor does the right thing by way of the thousands of LGBT citizens of New Hapmpshire and signs this into law. It would make me feel better about him.

I did vote for you last time, Gov, but only because you were the lesser of who cares.
- Corey, Sandown

The State Senate has failed the voters of New Hampshire. There was no need for this legislation since Civil Unions were already allowed. Once again, our Legislators give in to special interest groups and don't have the fortitude to stand up and do the right thing. Now we are no better than Massachuesetts, who started this whole mess. Heaven help us all.
- Kelly, Chester

Chris - Good day for NH? Sad day for logic and sound reasoning, hence society/America. Another score for the "worst generation" which has cost us our financial, social, economic, and cultural demise. Nice job baby boomers...
- Mike, Raymond

In 10 or 20 years, we will see and be proud that NH is on the right side of history, as we have been consistently throughout our great past.
- Ken, Manchester

Good day for NH?

Hardly. One of the darkest days yet. I'm sure there are more to come.

Thanks to all the refugees from Massachusetts who have turned this state upside down by voting in ultra liberal Reps. & Senators.

Certainly not the NH I grew up to respect and admire.
- Hank, Amherst, NH

Once again thank you to our distinguished body of legislators who again did the RIGHT THING. I continue to be very proud of this great sate of NH.
