Giuliani drums up support in Nashua, criticizes Clinton
By SUZANNE BATES

Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007
NASHUA – Supporters of Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani always come back to his image as savior of New York City -- especially following 9/11 -- when talking about why they support him.
Paul Mendrala came to Bickford's Family Restaurant from Merrimack with his wife Delilah and son Austin to see Giuliani. He credits the former mayor with cleaning up New York City.
"I've seen the progress that New York City has made aside from 9/11 -- he did a fantastic job on 9/11 -- but before that there was crime, mafia, there were sex shops, there were a lot of problems in New York," he said. "He went after the mafia, he tackled crime, he went after welfare . . . (it went) from a dangerous city to a safe city."
Delilah Mendrala said for her the issue is finding the right candidate to beat the presumptive Democratic nominee.
"My big thing is (Sen.) Hillary (Clinton)," she said. "Honestly, I don't think any of the other candidates can beat her."
Clinton was who Giuliani wanted to talk about yesterday.
He criticized her answer to a question in the Democratic debate Tuesday night about whether she would allow illegal immigrants to get drivers' licenses.
"Last night she did something I've never seen before," he said. "Sure she's known for taking one position with one audience, and another position with another audience, people know that about her. But what they didn't know was, she could actually take two different positions in front of the same audience."
Giuliani was also touting his "12 commitments," a series of campaign pledges that include keeping America on offense in the war on terror and cutting taxes.
Giuliani is still ahead in national polls, but in New Hampshire, former Gov. Mitt Romney is opening up his lead over the former mayor. Also, Romney's recent endorsement by Sen. Judd Gregg could mean even more trouble for Giuliani.
Giuliani hasn't campaigned as heavily in New Hampshire as Romney, and has also been criticized for ignoring the early voting states.
He also loses some conservative support because of his positions on some social issues.
One woman was at the restaurant to ask Giuliani to clarify his position on abortion.
Marge Ignelzi, of Hudson, said she couldn't support Giuliani because of his pro-choice stance on abortion.
"That's a deal breaker," she said.

All I have to say is don't waste your vote on putting Hillary as the Democratic candidate for President because she can not win..even against Romney. You're worried about terrorism? Then hello, you may not want to vote for someone who is going to let every single immigrant in this country with barely any guard up. Do you really think that terrorists won't get in pretending they're coming here for "a new life!"? Get real...and then they'd be handed a license and go work and VOTE...I'm shocked that people are so bullheaded to vote/not vote for someone just on their stand on abortion. Please investigate more to what the candidates want to do with this country instead of closing in on one subject.

Giuliani is the natural choice for those folks who feel Pres. Bush is correct on foreign policy. He also likes to govern in the same way Pres. Bush does. He is best positioned to give us "four more years".

Seems there are bigger issues to worry about than Guiliani's stand on abortion. I'm pro-choice too, BUT I'm more concerned about the future of this country, I'm scared to think what lies ahead for my daughter when she grows up.
- Tammy, Manchester
Karen from Rochester: Why is it that you think Guiliani is the only one experienced enough to protect our country from terrorism.
Karen he doesn't even understand foreign policy!
He has ties to the Mob, havent we had enough of that in our country.
His stance on the 2nd amendment makes him even less credible as a leader because he doesn't even want Americans to be able to protect them selves.
If you want leadership and a strong defense then vote Ron Paul.

Someone cares morw about abortion than protecting the nation and lives Americans from terrorists? How many people die in a terrorist attack? how many people die in an abortion.
Now I am against abortion as much as anybody, but to say abortion should be ahead of terrorism in terms of priorites we need to stop is absolutely absurd.
Go ahead and nominate Rommney NH, I'm sure Hillary doesnt mind the elction being handed to her on a silver platter
- John, Lowry, Plymouth, NH
Marge from Hudson: If the deal breaker for you is abortion, I wonder where protecting our country from terrorism would fall in your list of priorities? Guiliani is the only one experianced enough to do that. Time to set your priorities.
