Invading Iraq gets a nod, but illegal aliens are out

Rudy Giuliani said yesterday he "never had any doubt" that if he were President four years ago, he would have invaded Iraq. He said he is now "even more certain" that it was the correct national security move.

"I actually believe that Democrats are going to agree with me on that by the time we get to the general election," the Republican former New York City mayor said. Giuliani addressed a wide range of issues in an hour-long meeting with editors of the New Hampshire Union Leader.

Giuliani said that if Saddam Hussein were alive and in power, he would be trying to build a nuclear arsenal to meet a growing nuclear threat from Iran.

"We'd have two -- instead of one -- irresponsible, terrorist-supporting regimes that have enormous amounts of wealth available to them wanting to become nuclear powers in Middle East," he said. Libya would also be "a terrorist-supporting state with nuclear ambitions," he said.

History will show that "it will turn out to have been the correct decision to have removed him," Giuliani said.

Giuliani said Gen. David Petraeus is "the right general" to lead U.S. forces in Iraq, and the U.S. should persevere to achieve a stable Iraq "that will act as an ally for us in what will be an ongoing Islamic terrorist war against us for some time."

But Giuliani said the U.S. should not meddle in internal Iraq policy.

"I think we're going to have to be there a while to give them stability so they can work out a government that fits their culture, fits the degree of democracy that they want, the amount of compromise they want to make," he said.

Illegal immigration

Giuliani said that despite allegations to the contrary, he has always been tough on illegal immigration. As mayor, he said, he wanted to deport illegal alien criminals, but the federal Immigration and Naturalization Service opted for "gardeners" and restaurant workers as part of a "totally messed-up priority."

He said that as president, he would beef up border patrol capabilities and establish tamper-proof identification cards to allow the government to track immigrants, which will prompt them to get jobs and pay taxes.

Giuliani said part of immigration reform should be "to say you have to be able to read English, write English and speak English and understand the basics of what Lincoln described as the American creed."

He said he has never supported welfare payments for illegal immigrants, but only that they be allowed to send their children to public schools, to report crimes and to receive health care without fear of government retribution.

Separately, he said, he initiated "workfare" in New York City two years before it was included in Clinton administration's federal welfare reform program. He said New York at one point employed 36,000 workers who were also welfare recipients. He said he eliminated recipient duplication through a finger print-imaging system.

Going after Romney

Giuliani also fired back at rival Mitt Romney, who charged during the past weekend it was "very ironic" for Giuliani to criticize him for appointing a judge who allowed the release of a convicted killer who recently murdered again.

Romney noted Giuliani's support of former New York police commissioner Bernard Kerik, who is being indicted on multiple counts of corruption and fraud. Giuliani had recommended Kerik to the White House to be the nation's homeland security director.

"Bernie Kerik was a mistake, and I've said that," Giuliani said. "I made a mistake. I didn't check him out carefully enough, and I've learned from that."

During the weekend, Giuliani said Romney should "explain his appointment and the judge is going to have to explain her decision, but it's not an isolated situation."

He said FBI statistics show the rate of murder, burglary and robbery went up in Massachusetts while Romney was governor.

Romney's campaign yesterday released its own version of FBI statistics showing that violent crime, assaults, rape, larceny, motor vehicle thefts and the overall crime rate dropped during his four years in office.

Giuliani noted that his own claim to have reduced taxes 23 times in New York has been disputed, with some news reports saying that he initiated 15 of those decreases.

"Either category, I'm ahead of all of them by 15-0 or 23-0," he said. "The point I'm trying to make is you will be confident I will reduce taxes because I've already done it."

Energy, abortion, polls

Giuliani also:

  • Supported federal subsidies for carbon sequestration, solar power, hydroelectric power and hybrid vehicles. He backed streamlining federal regulatory requirements for nuclear power plants and drilling in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge as part of a concerted effort for energy independence.
  • Reiterated his promise to appoint "strict constructionists" to the federal bench but said he did not know if that type of judge would overturn the Roe v. Wade abortion decision, because one judge may view it as decided law and another may believe it was incorrectly decided and should be reversed.
  • Attributed his recent drop in New Hampshire polls to Romney having spent more than $7 million in the state while he has spent only "a few hundred thousand" dollars. He said he will now spend more time and money here but added that since he does not expect to win "every primary," his "fallback" is his big leads in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida and California, all of which will have primaries on Feb. 5.

Rick,
The notion of people hating america, because they are americans and are free is foolharty and not logical. The reason terrorism exists is because of "Blowback" do your research, us being in those countries infringing on their soverignty, It is like saying after the Crusades did the Muslims attack England It didn't happen and it wont happen again.
It is not a Liberal approach to cut spending. If you look at the defense budget and the money it costs to maintain an empire, we would only have to use a portion of the money we spend to fix issues at home SS and Medicare.A true republican will cut taxes and spending. The regime in office now has done a record amount of spending while cutting taxes which doesn't make any economic sense. Someone has to pay sometime for the spending.... Collective ressolve. I think the world knows what the USA is capable of, look at the repsonse after 9/11 pearl harbor etc. It wouldn't be cutting and runninng since we have given the Iraqi people plenty of time and support . We have to concentrate on our borders to make sure terrorists. Sure some form of terrorism will exist because their is a fanatical few. but when we occupy a country that few will galvinize into many.By "stones" and "right thing"What do you plan us invading Iran+ Syria It cost lives and dollars that bring the world to the brink of war.We have destroyed the capability of the terroists to make war abroad... so them getting us is only the case if we don't tighten security at homeThe largest killer of GI's is the IED not a naval attack etc. It is common sense to bring our soliders home( from Iraq, S. Korea, Germany, ) but I guess common sense isn't common..

Will someone in the Clinton campaign please inform her that Immigration is the (Key). It's the talk all over NC,SC, and GA.Please inform Mrs. Clinton that she has to take a complete stand on this subject,if she truly wants to lead this country as i know she can. A vote in NC. Jerome Lee

Mike I, that is liberal non-sensical thinking at it's finest. To think that "terrorism will crumble within itself" if we pull troops out of Iraq, Germany, etc is naive, foolhardy and wishful thinking. Where would you ever get that simplistic notion from? All we will be telling the world is that we lack the collective resolve to fight terrorism and come get us. Iraq may have turned out to be an expensive debacle but turning and running is not the American way, at least as long as Republicans are in power. We need a better exit strategy than that. We also need leaders with the stones to do the right thing and not just follow public sentiment polls.

Re: Zizzy

Wow, you really think Iraq was a threat still. No WMDs found, The iraqi millitary complex was destroyed after Gulf War I. We need to concentrate on our own borders, stop spending all this money on the War that we have to borrow from China and other Gulf countries. I am sure Al-Queda wants us in Iraq, because we are going bankrupt fighting this war. It is the same approach "The freedom fighters" used in Afganistan against the Soviets. Its weird how we called them freedom figters then and terroists nowl

Saddam kicked the inspectors out becuase it infringed on their Soverignity and Iran feels the same way, it is the NeoCon approach that calls fro pre emptive war and lying to the people of your own county. Last I checked none of the 9/11 hijackers were from Iraq or trained in Iraq.

We need to focus on our borders and tighten securit there. Take all of our troops out of foreign countries like Germany and S. Korea. I think, yes that countries will see this as an improvement and and terrorism will crumble within itself. Nothing to fight for !!!!!

The best way to judge someone is look at what they have said and what they have done. Most people thought that in the early 90's New York City was not governable, prior to Rudy Giuiliani becoming Mayor. In his campaign, Rudy promised to make NYC safe. From 1995 - 2001 murder, robbery and burglary decreased by 45 - 55%. The difference in NYC was palpable. Real estate values increased, companies moved into NY and tourists came in droves. Rudy kept his word. No candidate in either party has that record of accomplishment.
- Nick Viest, New York NY

Lets break this down folks from the beginning. Good ol GW did nothing more than finish daddy's war and why haven't they still found the WMD's? we are against certain countries from having nukes but how about our allies who we let continue to stockpile. Get rid of them all! Remember they are our friend now but so were others that have turned their backs on the US. He states that he doesn't support illegal aliens but it is ok to send their children to school to drain the taxpayers and the health system so isn't that welfare. In regards to the drop in crime, maybe they packed up and moved to Mass or NH. Look at the violent acts that have been committed in this State with the killing of law enforcement officials as well as innocent people being shot. No I am not a Romney supporter. Haven't decided with all the BS that is being spread!
- DM, Penacook

If the vast majority of Americans are truly against this war, someone is going to have to explain to me how the strongest supporter of the war (Rudy) is tied with Hillary in most General Election polls
- John, /plymouth, NH

We've seen how incompenent this democrat congress has been since they've taken power in 2006...........imagine how bad it'll be if they win the White House as well.............God help us
- Darrell Johnson, Weare

Where do you think Sadam got that gas from? The good ole USA when he was on the CIA paylist for his support against Iran. Read 1984, the government is constantly changing the "boogey man" and the blind sheep hate who they are told to hate.
- Joe Jackson, Merrimack NH

So Chris, were we supposed to wait until he did? How should we have handled the Iraq situation, by ignoring it? Why did Saddam repeatedly kick UN inspectors out? Are we supposed to wait for another 9/11 and react to it? What IS the different direction we should take? If we were to pull all of our troops from Iraq, does anyone really think the rest of the world will suddenly like us? I'm sure Al Qaeda and co. are also voting for a soft, dream world Democrat that would rather hand his/her lunch money over to the schoolyard bully than confront him.
- Zizzy, Manchester

Rick's comment depends on the incorrect assumption that the Democratic presidental candidates, and those who support them, are somehow "invested in American defeat." When we debate these issues, we should keep in mind that we are all Americans, and those who disagree with us are not necessarily traitors committed to undermining the United States. The reference to gassing Kurds is beside the point. Of course that was a ghastly, inexcusable action. It also happened in 1988, 15 years before we attacked. The fact that Saddam was able to murder people in 1988 does not mean he was in a position to harm the US, or others, in 2003. We have seen over the past few years that, in fact, Saddam did not possess the WMD that the Bush administration told us he had.
- Chris, Washington, D.C.

Very disturbing article. We have seen how close-minded, stick-to-it, never surrender stances - even in the face of overwhelming contradictory evidence - can be taken by some voters as "boldness" and "conviction." And it can get you elected president.

Rudy's no fool and is betting that he can scare people into supporting him, just like Bush has done, and my goodness what a world would await us if this man wins the presidency.... Very scary, indeed....
- E Heller, Princeton, NJ

Rudy Guiliani is the Fox News candidate. If you love Fox News, you've probably been manipulated into supporting Rudy. If you don't think the Fox News fellows are so bright, you probably don't support Rudy.
- Tony Spors, Minneapolis

As an Englishman born during World War 2, I just cannot understand how the great democracy of the U.S. can keep producing these war mongers, The U.S. is now the biggest threat to world peace and it has the most nuclear weapons.
- john arno, pattaya thailand

Giuliani has been consistently clear in his belief that this country is worth protecting and defending, including in those situations that require projection of American power overseas, whether or not the UN or Belgium likes it. Those who are uncomfortable with that notion, or for some reason are invested in American defeat, can vote for any of the Democrats. As for "lies" -- apparently the posion gas that Saddam used to murder tens of thousands of Kurds was from the goat burrito he had for lunch.
- Rick M., Portsmouth

Recent polling indicates a whopping 75% of Americans want the country to take a different direction.
Rudy represents more of the same failed Bush policies.
Here is my take: If you think the country is heading in the right direction, then vote for Rudy.
If not, well there are plenty of other options, most noteably Obama.
- K Mabey, Hanover, NH

Rudy lies almost constantly and has created the 9/11 mayor personality when it was just political photo-ops. It is pure BS.

He was singularly responsible for the deaths of the firefighters in the WTC because he, against all expert advice, insisted on placing the Command Center in the WTC instead of in a bunker in Brooklyn where it is now. - Because of his huge ego!

He also is responsible for providing the Fire Department radios that were incapable of communicating with the police department and therefore when a police helicopter broadcast warnings of the imminent collapse of the WTC tower the firefighters inside could not hear the warning and therefore perished.

Ask any NYC firefighter - they despise Rudy.

Giuliani has little foreign policy experience. He relies almost entirely on his chief foreign policy advisor Neocon "Godfather" Norman Podhoretz.

Podhoretz is the most extreme advocate of U.S. pre-emptive militarism in the Middle East -- relentlessly arguing for immediate attacks on Iran and Syria, and the eventual overthrow of the Saudi and Egyptian regimes.

Podhoretz recently said in an op-ed column in the Wall Street Journal that: “I hope and pray that President Bush will do it [attack Iran].” This is what a Giuliani presidency offers America.
- Dan Stewart, Atlanta

I'm not surprised by Rudy's position. Aside from our illustrious president, he's the most uninformed man in America. History will NOT show that this was the right decision. History will show that this was a disaster based on lies and nothing more.
