According to news reports out here on the red state prairies, Senator Gregg is not strongly in favor on the US Census. He is said to have tried to get a bill passed some years ago, stripping some funding from the census budget. Also, our news said that a person in the White House would have some oversight on the census and so would Gregg. I realize that means the WH would have the final say. But, isn't it the usual order of things for the White House to set policy and for the various Departments to carry out that policy? Seems to me to be the historical way of federal government.
- b. Leader, Wichita, Ks

I am so happy he left ..the sad news is that we in New Hampshire still have this fool. He did not leave Obama on ideaology..I was looking forward to the confirmation hearings. There are a lot of questions I would have liked answered!
- Joyce, Merrimack

This is what kills me about Republicans. Republicans want a smaller government. they want things like Social Security privatizeed and just about anything and everything privatized. The essence of a Conservative Republucan is that they feel they can do it better than any government agency etc. Well then, stop using the sewer lines provided byt he government to flush your waste water. Stop using the water lines to use public water. Stop using the public airways to air your concerns because after all the airways are public. For everything the Conservative Republicans claim they want to reduce and privatize, the republicans certainly use a lot of public entities to send their message.
The Republicans got us into this entire mess and Judd Gregg is one of the guilty parties.
- Jeff, Manchester

Gee< Judd, I'm sorry I spoke poorly of you. I am very impressed. You could just be the true Republican we are looking for. NH favorite son..........Maybe
- Mike, Auburn

LA from Derry calls out people for calling others names and then refers to liberals as "sheep"? If the prior name calling showed the "true blue" what does yours reflect other than ignorance and intolerance of those who dare disagree with you?
- jon, hooksett

I'm from N.H. and around these parts, Judd Gregg, is just another Republican hack politician. Considering he approached Obama for the job, then claimed "philosophical differences" is just another Republican Dirty Trick, and "politics-as-usual" for a short-sighted, Republican who got the job because his father was in politics. (Ha! just like Dumbo W!)
Thanks Judd - for for playing dirty pool politics and keeping the country in a Republican-caused Depression ("Recession" - yeah right!)
- George Ryder, Bedford

Hey Chip and all the other Republican bashers..

First off, name calling really shows the true blue, eh?

Second, it's pretty much at the point where our votes wouldn't matter anyway because the Blue Sheep will just vote it out...the way the seats are starting to look, we're going to be outnumbered anyway within the next few years.

Third, many are happy because even if he has his own personal agenda, he still said 'Um yeah, no sir" to Obama. It takes more than to say no and walk away than to be another uninformed sheep in the herd like most "liberals" and media in this country. It's sad that a party that has so much ego leads because they feed treats to the poor, the minorities, and everyone else they can inevitably control with money...hence this ridiculous bill.
- L.A., Derry

Andre...

What you fail to see is that the bank bailout was something that appeared like it would really help..and it was that one group. People blamed Bush and all the Republican party for "letting" banks do what they did...yet Democrats voted against every bill that would've helped make terms much more stern...not let every Tom, Dick, and Harry get a loan just cuz they wanted to. But that isn't necessarily printed or on tv so therefore, it must not exist...right?

This new stimulus is supposedly for the economy and it's loaded with pork that has nothing to do with creating jobs but more of funding socialist interests of the president and his buddies.

Get your facts straight.
- L.A, Derry

Once Judd saw how socialist the administration really is, he couldn't be part of it. Good for him. If only Maine had 1 real republican senator we would be in better shape.
- Bill Driscoll, Litchfield

Angelo M. from Manchester - I really like your suggestion that President Obama nominate someone who's a businessman/businesswoman first, and a politician second. That to me would be more conducive to "change", than the same old politics we've seen from this administration to date....
- Zoot, Derry

Good riddance, and have fun with your obstructionist playmates in the sandbox.

Shame on Gregg for being bullied by his party, but more importantly, as we learn that the world economic crisis is now our nation's #1 threat, even MORE than AlcQaeda, what's Gregg's response? NOT to join in, jump in and help all he can, but climb aboard the bozo bandwagon and hold his breath until his face turns blue.

Embarrassing for him. Embarrassing for NH.
- Nancy Pearson, Dover

I am so very pleased and happy with the president we elected. I think it is great to prove to our young nation that you CAN get a job in this country and learn along the way. In fact, I am going to apply to be a doctor, hopefully get it... after a few years i should be just fine.

Glad all the Obama fanatics are happy... This is a joke.
- jeff, keene

After this display of courage and integrity, I am half-inclined to urge Gregg to run for re-election, or even - dare I say it? - for president.
posted by - Tom, Campton

Yes!! I would vote for him.
- Mark Jenkins, Lee, NH

I applaud Senator Judd Gregg's decision. Having the conviction to stand up for what he believes in is something to be commended for. While President Obama talks the talk about bipartisan government, it is more apparent everyday that Pres. Obama does NOT walk the walk. He thought by picking Sen Gregg, he would continue to fool Americans that he is the hope for the future. Does America feel duped yet?
- Angela McLaughlin, Mont Vernon, NH

After this display of courage and integrity, I am half-inclined to urge Gregg to run for re-election, or even - dare I say it? - for president.
- Tom, Campton

What a fool Judd Gregg is. A disgrace to New Hampshire. Too bad he decided not to run again, depriving voters the chance to reject him.
- Jay Wells, Concord

Congratulations,Sen Gregg. Finally someone who has the courage to stand up for his convictions . The swift concealed stimulus bill and the cencus manipulation were issues that could not be ignored . Thank you Sen Gregg
- Maureen, Atkinson

Sen. Gregg’s actions are a disgrace to our state. Taking the Commerce position "would not work for him"? “It’s more of a question of just being me?” And he calls himself a public servant? Sen. Gregg, this is not about you! This is about the American people! This is the worst national crisis we have faced in decades and we should all be pulling together to use our talents to the maximum to get us out of this crisis. We should all be joining the President to contribute ideas and find solutions, as you seemed to be doing before you turned tail and ran.
Evidently only women from Maine have the courage to buck the party for the good of the nation. Show a little gumption and vote for the President’s stimulus package since you obviously don’t have the courage to face voters in 2 years.
- Sue Barney, Gilmanton

First, Gregg puts the Governor in the uncomfortable position of having to appoint a Republican to the Senate. Then Gregg hijacks all the media visibility on the day the Governor announces his major budget plans. Does the Governor need any more reasons to run against Gregg in 2010?
- Emmett, Littleton

I feel like a passanger in the Titanic! While the ship goes down people keep spreading the blame around. Instead of complaining why don't we accept that its not about ideology. It is about supporting our elected officials and not about whether they are Republican or Democrats. Are we winners, sore losers or whiners?
- Carlos, Francestown, NH

As an Independent, I am sorry to see Gregg turn tail and run.
He is not dumb… on the contrary, he is very politically astute and should have understood the role he offered to accept.
As a member of the Loyal Opposition, his inside position could have helped the President by providing clear and productive opposing views.
That was one of the problems with the Bush administration – he surrounded himself with yes men.

Hopefully the Obama vetting team learns from this mistake and selects another outsider – preferably someone from the business community.
- Angelo M, Manchester, NH

What a shame, I understand he had to turn down the offer of an Obama administration cabinet post because he missed the deadline to cheat on prior year taxes.
- Pete, Dover

Welcome back Senator. Obama, if he would reveal his birth certificate and lineage would reveal that his early training was as a con man, a capability he has honed to a fine edge.

He does not warrent support, though. His policies will destroy this nation. Now we need you working hard in the loyal- to -America opposition to Obama.

Wally Stickney.
- wally stickney, north salem

This whole thing was a ruse from the get go to charge the base. Judd Gregg will be as useful as Palin when the Republican machine is done with him. He might be able to raise a little money for the party in '10, but he is just as big of an embarrassment to the party long term.
- Jim Wilson, Manchester

That's right Mike from Bedford, everyone who's not a right-wing nutcase with aluminum foil on their head is a RINO! Let's look at this, Gregg was will to put partisan politics aside and for a coalition to fix the economic crises. The wing-ding, arm of the (my) Rupublican party has put the pressure on Greg to back off and remain engaged in the same old tit-for-tat agenda that got us into this mess. Now, he's not running...guess why? Maybe in retribution those same party "Leaders" have told Gregg that the party would no longer support him in a future bid of Senate and of course not support him in any role within the current administration. Another person with integrity falls to the right wing bullies.
- Paul, Derry

Notice the difference between the White House anouncement and Sen. Gregg's statements: A lot of sour grapes from the WH and a gentlemanly comment from the Senator. I'm sure the Census thing was s slap in the face and probably the last straw.
Pres. and the Dems should check the dictionary - bipartisanship is NOT defined as "Do things my way."
- Suzanne, Bristol

think somebody ought to check out Mr Gregg's taxes for the last few years?
- bobby, gilmanton

"Raymond Buckley, chairman of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, blasted Gregg and called him out of touch."

This is a typically thoughtless, useless and totally ad hominem comment from Ray Buckley.

Reach across the aisle to me, Ray. Let the dance begin.
- Larry Gillis, Cape Coral FL

Great move Senator Gregg! I knew something was up when the ObamaMan wanted to run the census!
Come on home to NH and run for Governor in 2010!
Dick Olson
Citizens Against Creepy Politics

- Dick Olson, Jaffrey

One of the big jobs that would have been Gregg's, the census job, was pulled away in a political grab. This made things obvious to him that he would never be more than a token Republican. So even if he previously thought he might be able to get some of his principles across to the new administration, it became clear that Obama and Rahm Emanuel were going to do what they please and just have Gregg as a front of bipartisanship.

Nothing this administration has done so far has involved any real bipartisanship. He "consulted with" the GOP for this special interest spending plan, but did not implement one piece of advice from them. Again, a show of bipartisanship. Their idea of bipartisanship is to involve GOP ideas only if they match the Pelosi/Reid ideas. Their "reach across the aisle" is photo op only.

And now, of course, the Dems jump into full campaign mode. Buckley blabs on, looking for any old anti-GOP argument. And Hodes says nothing that makes sense. He already started campaigning against Gregg for 2010, even though Gregg said he's not planning to run. Hodes just wants to upgrade from Pelosi boy-toy to Reid's slipper-fetching puppy. He was an actor in his previous life and continues to act his way to the top.

Mr. Gregg, I applaud your decision to remove yourself from consideration for the office of Secretary of Commerce. You have always shown a consistent commitment to principled, ethical, and dignified service to NH and the nation. I am sorry you will not be running in 2010, as we need your leadership. Your decision to not kowtow to the highest office in the land for personal and professional gain shows you are a man of integrity. Your replacement in 2010 can't help but pale in comparison, and we are sorely in need of principled people of integrity to lead our nation. That part of your decision I wish you would reconsider.
- Marc, Derry

I guess Judd didn't want any part of helping the Democrats rig the next census or maybe he didn't feel like being Obama's lilttle GOP puppet standing there smiling as Obama and his comrades try to spend this nation into their vision of what a socialist utopia America should be.

Either way Gregg's stock just went up about ten points in my book.

Barry and his supporters are still perpetuating the mythology that he is the messiah rather than accepting the truth that he's a lightweight hack in way over his head who will make us all recall the good ole days under Jimmy Carter when it's all said and done.

With each passing day it becomes more clear that the joke is on the American people.
- Dana, Kingston, NH

Many have voiced either criticism or support for the Senators decision but almost every comment is uniform is accusations of either lack of or distain for b-partisanship. it is clear that the Senator made a decision based on his principals rather than because of his party affiliation and he should be commended for that. There are those that find the pomp and circumstance of a post or position to be meaningful and those that want to make a difference and Senator Gregg is certainly the latter.
Did our elected officials make mistakes in the last 8 years? Yes but they were officials made up of Republicans and Democrats each of which should share the blame for failed policies which have hurt our economy. President Obama should be supported in his efforts to repair our economy but not at the expense of our children and one only has to read the contents of the stimulus package to recongnize that the same largess that prior administrations have been accused of is front and center in a much greater magnitude. I am certain that members of congress including Senator Gregg studied the package and could not support it not only because it simply wouldnt fix our economy but also because of its long term effect to on same. Many years ago because of similar mistakes, during the the 1970's and early 80's the US economy struggled with a mountain of debt and and interests rates in the high teens which strangled our countrys ability to grow. These mistakes of the past coupled with recent decisions are rapidly becoming the pathway which we and our children will pay for.
- James Jalbert, Rollinsford NH

Maybe Mr. Gregg is no longer Banking on America without Rush's approval, but just supporting Bank of America.

Gregg was a lead Republican negotiator in the bank bailout fund and more recently was one of the few Republicans to support release of the second half of the bailout funding. If confirmed by his Senate colleagues, he will be counted on to persuade leery fellow Republicans to support Obama's massive new stimulus plan.

The largest holding listed in Gregg's most recent financial disclosure filing was $1 million to $5 million in stock and savings in Bank of America, which has since lost about 85% of its value despite an infusion of $45 billion that Gregg voted to approve as part of last fall's $700-billion bank bailout fund.

Gregg's father, Hugh Gregg, a former governor of New Hampshire, was a founder of Indian Head Bank, which, after a pair of buyouts has become part of Bank of America.

At least we now know what the real conflicts maybe. Just think, 140th of the bailout that went directly to Bank of America might have been to just cover his own personal assets. The question that now should be posed is this newspaper concerned enough about the citizens of this state to look further into Mr. Gregg's connections-investments in the banking industry? I had to read the LA Times to hear this about our local conservative politician.

*** Editor's note: In a November 17, 2008, article, the Union Leader reported on the investment losses suffered by all four members of the state's delegation, including Sen. Gregg. The story included sidebars detailing their stock holdings. ***
- Robert, Candia

You people who are mad at Gregg are missing one small fact. After Obama named Gregg and Gregg accepted, Obama proceeded to take away the biggest reponsibility that the Commerce Secretary has-- the census. This probably embarrassed and humiliated Gregg who realized he was played as a sucker.
The real crime here is that Obama has handed over the census taking duties to his chief of staff and turned it into a political issue for the redistricting the house of representatives. This is the first time in US history that a president has done this and it is one of the biggest power grabs by a president in recent memory, if not all of all US history.
- Steve Dennis, Kingston

Spine? Principles? Give me a break!
Judd's always been an opportunist politician. Me thinks he didn't dare face
the intense scrunity he'd have to go through.

Or maybe he had anxiety attacks about the inept, unqualified Bonnie Newman taking his place! She's not qualified. It's a text book example of "it's not what you know but who you know!"
- KaseyMarie, Exeter

Frank gets the uninformed voter award of the day. Gregg is up for reelection in 2010. Click off of the Daily Kos, turn off MSNBC and do your homework.
- Dirk M., Manchester, NH

Phony politician. That is what Judd Gregg is. This was nothing more than a ploy by Gregg and his republican old cronies to make Obama look bad. Judd could care less about the people and cares more about his partisan politics. Republicans are sore losers and they can't handle it. Judd Gregg is a flip flopper who puts politics before the country. Phony
- Jeff, Manchester

When the going get tough, the tough get going. Please Judd, do not return to NH. Move in with Palin!

Intelligence comes in many forms...
- Bob,, Manchester, NH

What a jerk. I think he did this as a political dirty trick. He asked Obama for the job. Does anyone really think he did not know what he was getting into?

Gregg, like the rest of the Republican Party only care about one group. The RICH and the POWERFUL.

It cracks me up when I read the Limbaughites caling people "socialists." They would not know a socialist if one punched them in the nose. LOL
- Daniel T., Adrian, Mi

I Judd took a look under the hood of Obama's real policies and didn't like what he saw. It is obvious to me that there is a real difference between what Obama says to the public and what he says behind closed doors among his cohorts.
- Bob Hill, Concord NH

Wow, it seems the Obama fans are furious that Sen. Gregg has decided not to tether himself to this new administration. Wise move Sen. Gregg. Experienced people can spot a bad idea from afar, and this new stimulus will be a mess.
- Matt Fixler, Center Barnstead

What a complete jerk. Didn't Obama win NH by 9%? No wonder Gregg's not interested in running in 2012 -- when he'd lose to Paul Hodes.

Gregg chose obstructionism and conflict over helping our state, and our nation. What a shame.
- Frank, Manchester

NH continues to need leaders who embrace fiscal conservatism and personal responsibility. I would love to be able to move back to the state I love when our jobs allow it. All you who insist that the Dems follow socialist principles will force this tax-paying couple to move to a more responsible location.

Senator Gregg has always been a man of principle. It is a shame that the 'interview' process for this job was so public. Any other executive has the opportunity to rethink the decision without rancor.

Obama is weaker for being unable to resolve his differences with this honorable, principled Senator. He should have thought longer about manipulating the census process and bowing to Pelosi, Reid and Buckley pressure to fulfill the Democratic wish list with an unworkable, ineffective 'stimulus' plan.

I currently live near the site of the single most important event of the American Revolution. We need to remember that fortitude and courage, and respect those values in NH, not tear them down.
- Kathy, Washington Crossing, PA

It has now become crystal clear to Judd Gregg that the spending atrocity being fast-tracked out of Washington is an unmitigated disaster, not only for us, but for all of our children and grand children for decades to come.

The greatest irony is this: Although fear is fueling the economic collapse, Obama is using fear of a catastrophe as a tool to usher in an unprecedented surge of big government, most of which has nothing whatsoever to do with short term "economic stimulus". Whatever happened to "We have nothing to fear but fear itself?" Now, we have a fear-monger-in-chief purposely fueling the anxiety! This is an outrage of the highest order, and surely Judd sees this tactic for what it is.

Thank you, Judd, for having the courage to admit that lending your credibility to this socialist train wreck was a huge mistake.
- Jim Buttolph, Rumney

What a waste of news to report. There are more important things to talk about. Not about this man, whom is not a true Senator.Term limits is becoming increasingly popular amoung the thoughts of Americans. What about the taxpayer whom is suffering? We have to hear about this man, whom is wining about the census being taken away, and his seat not being occupied by a Republican.Ive never heard of such blatant chidishness in my life grow up and fight for America.
- Thomas Brackett, ConcordNH

That's the JUDD NH knows. Judd didn't belong in OBAMAS cabinet. He always paid his taxes.
- PJ, Manchester NH

He did not give a single specific philosophical reason.
- Greg Salts, Manchester

It figures! We finally find a Senator with a conscience and conviction for a fiscal responsible government, and he decides to quit in 2010. No wonder the Senate has become a gang of socialist liberals; the majority of voters no longer want to take care of themselves. Why should they when can get it for free. Just remember folks-freedom isn't free!
- DB, Merritt IslandFL

Just Quit The Senate Judas Gregg!!

Quit all politics...you're a weather vane out of control.

We need leadership and direction, not 'mistakes' in judgement.

Do Not Come Back to the Granite State you mindless fool!
- Daniel O Lloyd, Kingston

A Gregg is a terrible thing to waste. Does anyone have any positive suggestions?

Everything Judd Gregg said today about his decision to withdraw rings true, with all the hallmarks of a very principled and very personal decision.

I think that New Hampshire will come to miss his wise counsel even more than it does today.
- Larry Gillis, Cape Coral FL

Jon from Hookset you asked "So basically you're rooting for the president of the US to fail and to look foolish?Wouldn't any American want the president to succeed at being president? ". No one wants your president to look foolish but any American that believes in the Constitution and Democracy would want to see Obama fail, not for any reason but that he is a socialist, his policies are socialist and his cronies are socialist. Socialism has never and will never work and he is trying to destroy the very foundation this Country was built on. You people and your whining and praying that W will be remembered as a bad President really need to get a new mantra. Your dream will never come true. Carter owns that distinction for now and in 2012 Obama will own it.
- Allan, Rochester

Chris in Londonderry, just like Mass, right? Wrecked and bankrupt and crime-ridden just like Mass?

Liberals are like locusts. They destroy one field and move to another, destroy it too, move on...
- Mike R., Bedford

He voted for the bailouts before he realized he was against the bailouts, but voted for them the second time around anyway by not voting for them or against them. Clear as mud?

Go away swiftly and quietly, Judas Gregg. You did not perform your duties for your constituents. You just did as your keepers told you to do. I hope you continue to be overwhelmed by phone calls and letters and e-mails from the taxpayers and voters you claim to represent, who keep telling you to STOP the crazy bailout nonsense!

You have proven to be against small government, and in favor of corporatism, lobbyists, and "favors." You are a sell-out not only to your party, but to the New Hampshire citizens who elected you to represent them.

P-tooey!
- David, Manchester

Judd Gregg what a disgrace.Lifetime politician =140,000 a year pension,100 percent lifetime paid health insurance, plus so many other benefits there is not enough space here to list them. And don't forget yearly cost of living increases on that pension. Jackie Gleason said it best. How Sweet It Is !!!!
- Daryl, Dover

Senator Gregg,
Welcome back from the "Dark Side"!!
I hope that you will run again, so Hodes has mopre to whine about!!

JohnP
- John Potucek, Derry NH

You want the job, then you don't want the job. What a waffler....
- JC, Newfields

Idle thoughts while wondering what I'm going to spend my "Middle Class" windfall of an extra $8.00 a week on.....

If anyone here thinks this is a positive for Obama, they don't know politics.

I'm sure if George Bush put Karl Rove in charge of the census, the Liberals would think it was as good a move as putting Rahm Emanuel in charge of it.

It's disappointing how many people refer to Gregg and the 2010 election when the first paragraph clearly states he is not going to run for re-election.

***(Editor's note: When the story broke, nothing was said about the 2010 election. In a later press conference, he said he wouldn't run.)*****

Throughout the campaign Obama claimed he wanted his cabinet to propose differing views to challenge his own. Like his immediate withdrawal from Iraq, pledge of no lobbyist on his team, and his plan to cut wasteful government programs, it was all talk to fool middle America. He'll always have the Liberals, but his 58% approval rating will only sink in the coming years.
- Billy, Derry

What a tool, he went to the White House to put his name in the ring, he betrayed all you die hard NH republicans and now he looks like a buffoon again. I can't wait until the real reason why he withdrew comes out.
- Jim Wilson, Manchester

Senator Gregg clearly didn't think the whole Commerce thing through - especially the part about getting so much flack from the kinds of people who wail, moan, and gnash their teeth on this website each and every day. And now he's embarrassed himself and the President, creating the kind of distraction that hinders Washington's ability to get things done - not that it was ever that accomplished in that area to begin with ... I'm rooting for all these clowns to succeed so that the rest of us can live better lives, but days like these are pretty discouraging.
- Joe, Manchester

The partisan rhetoric is rediculous around here. As soon as everyone gives up the "my team is better than your team" bull, we can start fixing the mess our country is in. Earth to Republicans: Your years as a majority did NOTHING good for this country. NOTHING. Earth to Democrats: Your constant bickering and blaming "the other party" got absolutely NOTHING good done either. Politicians need to act their age, it's like we've elected kindergarteners to run our government. All the grown up brats that chime in, rooting for one side, and spitting on the other, you are no better.

Everyone who bashes Obama's plan and Obama's leadership is playing into the sour-grapes foot dragging that is exactly why Gregg is coming home. It's not about him taking a stand for what he believes in. This is a guy who faked interest in the position so he could back out and make the new administration look bad. He doesn't care about trying a risky plan, that could very well help our Nation. He is more interested in sulking in the corner, hoping that Obama's plan fails so that he can say "the Republicans told you so".

While we are losing our homes, jobs, and dreams, these politicians continue to collect a paycheck. While they argue back and forth about what won't work, they provide no clue to what will, and still, they collect a paycheck. While Republicans taut their party, and Democrats rally theirs, we wait patiently for something, anything, to change for the better, and they are still getting paid by our tax dollars.

I don't care who solves the problem. I don't care what party they belong to. The fact remains, as long as politicians are loyal to their party, and not the people of our country, nothing is getting done for us in Washington.
- J.J., Manchester

"Obama will go down in History as the worst President since Jimmy Carter.
- David, Salem"

You mean worst since George W. and if this guy is so great how come he did not fix the claremont funding issue before he left office, instead of passing the buck to his predecessor?
- JR, manchester

What a pathetic group of republicans commenting on this story. All of you could not criticize Gregg enough recently and now he's your best bud again. What a bunch of absurd hypocrites! You really shouldn't wonder why you are the MINORITY party.
- Frank, Manchester

Chris in Londonderry

You forget that the majority of registered voters are independents. With no Bush to kick around any more plus all the toll increases that have come so far as well as the new ones in Lynch's new budget puts the "blue majority" in trouble. Independent voters are not a loyal voting block when they feel they are getting shafted.

Thank You Judd Gregg for getting out. I was worried about you "growing in office". The census shouldn't be politicized.
- Chris, Merrimack

He can always change his mind regarding 2010...I'm sure many liberal's are not happy about this! Even if he doesn't run in 2010 he will still be a force to reckon with. My guess is when he started peeling back the Obama onion he saw just how bad things are being run there and probably realize it was a lost cause. Tim Geithner is the biggest joke going on right in DC!

Good for him for not taking a position that he probably realize didn't suite him and that he wouldn't be able to effectively work in!
- Mike, epping

Partisan!
- Roger LaBrie, Woodbridge VA

It saddens me to see what is happening to our country. I was just thinking today that I wish we had people that we strongly believed in to vote for - true statesmen. We could start a new party and only true statesmen need apply!

You have restored some of my faith in our representatives.

As for the other comments regarding the bailout of 2008 - if I remember correctly they Repubs were dragged to the table.

Regardless of your politically leannings, what Judd Gregg did took courage, integrity, backbone.

The curtain has been pulled away and "Change" is a sham. Obama is everything I thought he would be - oh, and so much more.
- Sandy, Sharpsburg, GA

To be honest, has there ever been a perfectly pure politician?? We all have some skeletons in our closets, but isn't it about time we voted in the best people for the job , regardless of party lines?? Just cos Daddy and his Daddy voted Rep or Dem doesn't mean you should be voting the family ticket, but picking the right person to do what YOU want to happen...
- Brian Shipley, Loudon

Does this mean that the liberal media will now be forced to make the story public on how Obama's White House is illegally grabbing control over the 2010 census for partisan purposes? Gee I hope so. Those of us who don't get our news from CNN and ABC knew about this over a week ago. For an administration who was supposed to bring openness, bipartisanship, and change to Washington, Obama sure looks like the person that the liberals were accusing Bush of being for 8 years....Hitler.

Yes Gregg is a RINO, but he obviously couldn't stomach the hypocrisy of Dear Leader and his minions any more than the rest of us who love the Constitution. Flame on, mindless liberal sheeple. It matters not. Your Dear Leader's actions speak much louder than his (or your) useless words. He's made more stupid mistakes and poor choices in his first 30 days than I can remember any recent president making in their first 4 years. Looking forward to 1-20-13: End of an Error.
- Mike, Temple

Hahahaha...So no cabinet job, no senate seat, no nothing.

Gregg...a hack politican right to the bitter end...How soon in 2011 do you think we'll see the sentence "Judd Gregg, lobbyist for (fill in the special interest)?"

Good riddance, Judd...John...Charlie...Jeb...Bill...
- NSR, Epping

Just a quick question, if you disagree with the government/president line on policy, wouldn't the best place for you do something constructive about it be in the government itself, instead of running away and backing out of the legislature completely. To be honest, I have to think the worst, and that your supposed intelligent decision is being far outweighed by something that is not being exposed to the public domain.
- Brian Shipley, Loudon

Lance, you're happy with Gregg's choice because it made Obama look foolish? So basically you're rooting for the president of the US to fail and to look foolish? Wouldn't any American want the president to succeed at being president? Wouldn't that be best for the country? I would have liked Bush to perform well, but unfortunately for America he failed miserably as president.
- jon, hooksett

Talk about flip flop.
- DM, Hampton

Wow! One poster has stated that there would have been 4 million jobs created at a cost of 900 billion and thinks that is a good thing, the same poster states that the census can now "stay where it is" Actually if the poster was able to think clearly he would know that the way the Census was going to be run according to his president would be unconstitutional as the constitution states that the census WILL be run by the Commerce Secretary and that a physical count would be done. The poster also has the ability to pass judgment on how one serves his country, no one who goes along with this socialism promotion bill is not serving My Country. He is right about one thing though, now they can get a socialist to run the Commerce dept. and "guess" at the results for the census. If the poster paid attention and could think for himself he would have heard and read Gregg say he would not run for the Senate in 2010. The only way MY America wins is if Obama's and the socialist policies lose. In other words, when Mike Lane's country loses, we will have ours back. The one downside is that if Gregg had been in the Cabinet there would have been at least one leader in this administration.
- Allan Trombley, Rochester

So.... NOW Gregg says that collaborating with Obama will "compromise" his "principles". One has to ask, where the hell were those principles last month? The man has none --I've been saying it for years, and now he's publicly proven it. Someone with real principles would have realized his incompatibility with the communist Obama from the first days of the democrat primary process.
- Mark K., Manchester

Good for Judd Gregg. He may have made himself look bad by withdrawing, but he's managed to make Obama look foolish yet again. Get ready for the "Barack Obama Downward Mobility" years in America, where if you're not aspiring for mediocrity and below, you're considered a villian.
- Lance, Hooksett, NH

It would appear many of you groupies having an affair with Gregg didn't read the full story...

He's NOT running again. Turn NH Blue, 2 more years...
- Chris, Londonderry

THANK GOD!!!! Thrilled to have you back Senator Gregg. I'm glad you realized you were just window dressing for this administration.
- Sue, Goffstown

WOW a politician that has the back bone to stand up for what he beleives is right.

Sen. Gregg my hat off to you!!!
- Art, Webster

I surprised that all of the repub cheerleaders are happy with this move. You had the chance to have a seat at the big boy table and the position would have empowered Gregg to bring policies forward that would help small business.

It's very sad that the consensus here is "Hooray Gregg, don't try to bring about a positive change" or "don't go down with the ship" if only you idiots realized we're all on the "ship". You prefer he stay in the minority party that is basically powerless to do anything but kick, scream, pout, and vote no without effect.
- Chip, Wilton

Thank you Senator. For just going away. Please encourage other RINOs to take your lead.
- Michael, Manchester

What a pathetic windbag gregg is . Is Commander in Chief Obama done playing yo yo with this sorry excuse of a polititian? A national embarrasment from the state of NH. Watch as kool aid drinking republican zombies welcome this Benedict Arnold back into camp. Too funny.
- Don, Manchester

1. Gregg says he is NOT seeking reelection in 2010.
2. We could have used his "influence" last week.
3. Does this mean we can count on Judd to oppose what Collins, Snowe, and Specter are supporting?
4. Now, will the Republicans have a great Senatorial candidate to vote for in 2010?
I could not understand any Republican wanting to serve in the Obama Socialist Movement.
NH is waiting for answers to these questions - well, at least I am!
bnyoung@metrocast.net
- Niwl Young, Laconia

Hey Steve from Swanzey,

How about giving us all a break? It's not as if there's no "mean spirited (conservative) sniping" going on now is there? The same Republicans who essentially rubber-stamped Bush's bank bailout bill in the fall...happy with that one are ya Steve?...are the same people who refuse to vote for Obama's bill a scant two months later...party poltics at its worst! Nothing to be proud of my friend. Party pols are all alike, regardless of which party they belong to.
- Andre, Manchester

The only sad part is he won't run in 2010. He is truly one of the most honest men in Washington and we need to keep the few we have left. Maybe he can be convinced to change his mind before 2010.
- Don Chagnon, Bedford

I feel bad for Judd. Now he must go back to working with the Queen of Mean .. Jeanne Shaheen.. Shaheen is beyond pathetic, she is darn right dangerous.
- tom, manchester,nh

Senator Gregg,

THANK YOU! Thank you for representing us and saying no to the madness. We need you to run for reelection.

Gregg Again in 2010!
- Christian, Goffstown

Thanks heavens Gregg is going and will soon be gone.

That pathetic "Bush Rubberstamper" negotiated the TARP bailout, helped rob the National Treasury and broke our hearts.

I hope he stays out of politics and moves out of state to a place where he can't hurt anybody else.
- Karin Wells, Peterborough, NU

A man of principal -- who wudda thunk it in Washington!

However Senator Gregg has always be thus, whether I agreed with him all the time matters little. Principal is principal, and class is class. Cheers to you, Senator Gregg.

Sadly I note the mean spirited liberal sniping. Now there's no Change whatsoever.
- Steven, Swanzey

Judd Gregg = Empty Suit
Any Democrat is better than Gregg!
And talking about illegal immigrants just ask the Indians what they think! HA
- Billy Bob, Manchest

Obama will go down in History as the worst President since Jimmy Carter.
- David, Salem

Bait and switch is right. Reach across the aisle then gut the department after trying to change the "balance" in the senate. Senator Gregg does have a spine and is one of the few in Washington.
Why gut the department? for transparency of course. So we can see a real census that determines our Reps in Washington and where the really needed spending goes. Oh wait that isn't the way it would work by moving it to the White House.
Maybe now i can again contact a NH senator with my concerns. Instead of what I've been dealing with since he was nominated, "messages are full". get an email address Senator Shaheen and post it, please.
Vote him out? At the rate this administration is changing the rules the President laid out prior to being sworn in, and trying to install, and succeeding in some cases, tax cheats and less than the best, these guys are the best weapon the GOP has to even out the balance of power. People just have to open their eyes and not be blinded by the light.
Blame for this mess? There is more than enough to go around and way back in time.
- ron n, ashland

While I question why he entertained this notion to begin with, I'm glad he came to his senses about this extremist, liberal, big-spending administration. Why be affiliated with this group of left wingnuts, anyway?
- Stephen, Manchester

Sen. Gregg, now that you not going to run in 2010, can we have our money back you have held in your Senatorial PAC coffers for the past four years.

Good move today!
- Jack Truman, Middleton

Senator Gregg, I commend you on this move, we really need you here in New Hampshire right now as we are really in a budget crisis, we need you back involved alot on the issues here in NH. what a mess

I have never seen anything like what we are up against right now at least in the last 30 years.

You are alot like your Dad, and will be able to help resolve alot of problems here in the state and be a supporter of the people who live here. Sentaor Gregg we need you more now then ever before.
- John, Warner

I'm just amazed that people are excited that Judd Gregg is staying in the Senate.

I was done with him after he supported the McCain/Kennedy amnesty bill for illegal immigrants.

I, for one, can't wait until that shamless opportunist is out of elected office.
- William Smith, Manchester, NH

It doesn't surprise me that Judd Gregg let down the NH voters yet again. He doesn't have to worry about running again because we won't re-elect him.
Old wealthy NH Republicans are completely out of touch with the rest of us who are still scratching out a living here.
- Amanda, Salem NH

Well. The Obama administration has certainly started off on the right foot, hasn't it?

I wonder how the media would have reacted if George BushHitler and his evil puppetmasters Rove and Cheney had grabbed the Census out from under their commerce secretary nominee in order to appease special interests? Think we'd see spit-flying outrage from CBS, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, PBS, NY Times, LA Times, Boston Globe etc., etc., etc.? Not to mention diatribes about the dismantling of the constitution from a few dour sorts who populate these comment sections.
- Rick, Portsmouth

Sen. Gregg has recognized that the community organizer is in way over his head.

Gregg will not go down with the sinking ship.
- Bill Howard, Exeter

Another amazing feat of irrational thinking brought to you by posters on this website:

Many of you seem to know that this administration is a disaster after less than one month. Why did it take you more than 4 years to figure out the last administration was a disaster?
- Peter, Manch

So I guess the GOP made him an "offer he couldn't refuse." It will interesting to see what the size of the payoff will be.
- LJC, Manchester

Is that Judd Gregg, riding high on his White Stallion, metal shining olive branch covered helmet gleaming in the NH sunlight as he triumphantly gallops back from the abyss to return the sound of bugles blaring triumph? My faith has been returned, our champion has seen the light, now all republicnas can cheer, and maybe, reunite under our once proud party of financial common sense. I can't wait until the democrats go after Judd. What can they say about him now? He's a bad guy? I mean didn't the messiah himself hand pick Senator Gregg for his round table? Today is a good day, a really good day!
- joekelly, manchester

Wise move; good man, smart Senator!
- Patty, Stratham

I can't help but think Obama was set up on this one. I didn't care for Gregg before this but now I really can't stand him. I am now energized to unseat Gregg in 2010. I am going to canvass, make phone calls, and give money to make sure this person never represents our State again.
- David, Derry

Wow, he's got more common sense than I gave him credit for.

He's still a RINO, but he seems to have realized it was best to get off the Titanic at Queenstown.

It's obvious Obama wants an echo chamber of socialists. It seems Gregg didn't want to be the pet Republican to be blamed when the liberal plans fail...as they invariably will, as they always do.
- Mike R., Bedford

After expressing concerns in my Feb. 2 commentary about your state following New York's miserable example of how NOT to replace a Senator, all I can say is "Congratulations and thank you, Sen. Gregg!" We'll never know whether a Reid-Pelosi backed double cross would have occurred on Lynch's promise of a Republican replacement, but it would also not surprise me if Mr. Gregg smelled that rat lurking behind the scenes. This "marriage of convenience" would have been of primary benefit to the Democrat agenda. His gut correctly informed him that no real good could come of it.
- Mike Handelsman, Brooklyn, NY

Judd Gregg for President 2012 (or at least 2016)!!
- Hugh, Deerfield

Good. He is beginning to earn my support again. If he hadn't voted for Bush's bailout, I'd be behind him even more. This is a good step in the right direction. Sounds like his brain is finally getting into gear.
- Jonathan, Bedford

Jud, Did you forget to pay taxes on that $800,000 powerball win? Just kidding. Thanks for doing the right thing. Clearly the dems want to use their own gerrymandering system of census taking. Besides, if they left the job with Commerce you would probably have to move to Chicage to learn the democtrat way of counting.
- Bill, Manchester

Looks like the stimulus plan is working, it's already created one job opening.

Honestly, this is a best case scenario for Democrats. It highlights the Republican's decision to play politics during a time of crisis. Gregg opposed the 4 million new jobs and now has shown he doesn't support a people powered census, that will not go over well with the voters in NH come 2010. As a matter of fact he probably only accepted the nomination so he could mess up the census. Why President Obama wanted a man to run Commerce who didn't even believe the office should exist is beyond me.

Gregg, on the other hand, has made a huge mistake. Not only is he skipping out on an opportunity to serve his country, he's putting a big target on his Senate seat in 2010. GOP hyper-partisanship has claimed another victim.

Now we can get a Dem Commerce Sec., the Census Bureau can stay where it is, Gregg will face reelection as damaged goods, and President Obama will have (hopefully) learned a valuable lesson. It is sad, though, that Gregg is putting his Party over his country. It's really par for the course for Rush Limbaugh and the GOP these days. The only way the GOP can win in 2010 is if America and President Obama fails. Sad.
- Mike Lane, Manchester

I don't know what he was thinking in the first place, but at least he has come to his senses.

Now, get ready to battle the Obamacrats!
- Tom, Campton

It's truly refreshing to see a politician stand up for his beliefs and values rather than simply giving in and playing politics. Congratulations, Senator Gregg.
- Brian, Farmington

Isn't his reason obvious? Everyone that will not get re-elected because they threw money at people in this stimulus is running away from it. The truth about what a garbage bill this is is finally being shown.
- Mike, Londonderry

Thank goodness, there is someone with a backbone. Thank goodness, and welcome back.
cu later, Manchester
- culater, Manchester

ROCK ON JUDD!!!!! NH is proud of you! You got our votes in 2010. Paul Hodes won't stand a chance!
- Marc, Weare

Well I was hoping Gregg would come to his senses and turn down Obama's job offer. It was truly a match made in hell.

Senator Gregg should now issue an apology to the people of New Hampshire and pledge to begin working anew for our interests.

You can rehabilitate yourself politically, Senator Gregg but it's going to take some work on your part. You made a lot of people very angry with this foolishness and you better start building bridges again before it's too late.

2010 is coming...
- Bob Johnston, Milford

I was mad as hell when I heard he was accepting the nomination. I am now happy he declined.
- eddie, Hookset

Thank God
- David Hurst, Manchester

Shocking (not)! Why in the in the world would the most left leaning President this country has ever seen choose a conservative Secretary in the first place?
The senate will be better off with Greggs vote rather than having him pander to his boss trying to keep the job
- Jesse, Orford

Another poorly vetted candidate. This one has integrity. Darn.

Welcome home, Judd!
- Steph, Litchfield

I think this might have a lot to do with Gregg's staffer who was involved with that massive Ponzi Scheme...not over yet.
- Au-Boo-Shawn, Leominster MA

A spine! Thank God almighty, a spine! I was beginning to wonder if the party I usually cite as my own still had one. What's next, true conservatism?
- Matt, Wilton

Glad to see Judd grew a pair. Nothing like being appointted and then having all your power and responsibilities taken away just so the Messiah can say he's reaching across the aisle.
- Danny, Weare

Looks like he peered behind the curtain and did not like what he saw. He should have realized this many weeks ago.
- Jon Daley, amherst, nh

One would think that prior to accepting a nomination from the President of the United States -- particularly one from the other party -- one would have given some more thought to the ideological "conflicts" that were bound to come up. Senator Gregg's move looks like Republican politics as usual. Thank goodness, though, we won't have such an erratic person at the helm of such a key position.
- Mike, Bellingham, WA

Finally, a Cabinet nominee withdraws due to the presence of a spine, rather than a lack of one.

Good for him. He has principles and he's sticking to them. Disagree with him or not, this is a show of personal integrity we don't see much of these days.
- CMD, Candia

Taking away the census was a clear bait and switch. That, and Gregg no doubt saw what a complete disaster this administration is and will continue to be. Congratulations to him for having some integrity.

Gregg 2010
- Mark, Amherst

Phew! That was a close one! As much as I can't stand having this arrogant wing-nut represent me in the Senate, at least he's spared the rest of the country from doing his damage!
- Michael Bellefeuille, Bedford, NH

Judd,
Do you mean he told you one thing and did something else?
Now you know what the rest of us Americans feel like!
"Change we can believe in" my but(t).
- Bob, Nashua

Too bad. I think the benefit to NH with Gregg as Commerce Secretary would have been much greater than him remaining a member of the Republican opposition. NH is a state with a large number of small business that could have used his clout at Commerce to steer dollars and projects to these businesses and the State. Gregg has chosen ideology over pragmatism and the NH small business community is all the poorer because of this.
- Jim, Houston, TX

LOL! Its like Bob Smith all over again! What a laughing stock.
- Jim, Manchester

GREAT!!! now we are stuck with him.....he can give us 2 more years of reasons to vote dem in 2010! :)
- James, Derry

It is unfortunate that Judd cannot represent the people and do so in a manner consistent with his duties as a public servant as opposed to a Republican. I will not vote for him again.
- Crisp, Bow

Senator Judd Gregg has shown great courage and principle by declining to vote on the stimulus bill. His example should be noted and followed by other Republicans - "Just say NO" by not voting at all. Now that is courage in the face of adversity.
- Joey, Derry NH

What a jerk. I guess the GOP will be send him a special stimulus check. Why worry about the country's welfare when you have Mitch McConnell to cuddle with.
- Kate, Dallas, TX

Looks like Hodes may have jumped the gun.
- Cathy, Concord

Jeez Judd - didn't ya think this through enough? Better plan on taking Bonny out to dinner - if she's still speaking to you
- Frank, York Me

That's cool- we'll vote him out in 2010.
- Jeff, Manchester

If true, woo-hoo!
- Jim, Manchester

And so it continues...
- Steve, Derry

THANK GOD! Thanks, Judd! We were missing you already.
- Keith Murphy, Manchester
