Tax cap opponents file complaint with city
MANCHESTER – Opponents of the newly approved cap on taxes and spending filed a complaint with the city Tuesday alleging that some election workers made inappropriate statements at the polls.
The anti-cap group Keep Manchester Moving said the workers were overheard referring to the ballot question as a "spending cap" or "tax cap." By law, they said, the workers should have referred to the initiative as a "charter amendment."
In a statement, the organization said it is "very sensitive" about the issue, claiming the word "cap" could lead some voters to believe, mistakenly, that the proposal would keep taxes from ever increasing.
Opponents also filed a complaint with the state Attorney General's office alleging a group called Citizens for Sensible Legislation posted pro-cap signs around Manchester but did not file at City Hall identifying itself as a political group.

So, is this like ACORN committing a federal crime to influence the outcome of an election? Of course not silly....lefties can do anyhting they want to promote the cause of socialism...any one else is wrong if they push their point of view.

Jess,
Let me get this straight, you really believe these things are going to happen? you too unfortunately have been duped by liberals. Low taxes are what bring business to cities. And do you really think that their will be no arts and ammenities without help from the city? I believe there are plenty of for profit businesses that fill some of those voids. I am not saying that we have to cut and eliminate these deptartments, just that no one seems to mention them when referencing a spending cap. They only reference cutting vital services like police and fire. There are many things that could be reigned in if needed for spending aside from schools and public safety. And just because they have to reign it in for a couple years does not mean it is permanent. Our society is too stuck on instant gratification. Remember the days when you didn't buy things with credit cards and money that you didn't have? those were the days. That is exactly what this bill is about. Stop adding expenses to the city that it residents and business can't afford to support. This is NH, if you want all these extra services move to Massachusetts where that kind of attitude is rampant. Around here fiscal conservatism has always reigned, and its clear from the result of this vote, that it isn't quite ready to die yet.

Keep Manchester Moving represents nothing short of out-of-state, moneyed, liberal interests.

Now that we the people have spoken, what i'd like to see happen, is for this to happen in CONCORD. the spendocrats there are really the ones bleeding us dry. they spend way more than they get in revenue(taxes). so they keep raing "fees" and taxes to make up for their "shortfall". and no, governor, you can't blame it all on the recession. most of it is due to little or no fiscal restraint. you and the spendocrats will drive us into a block wall called "broadbase tax".

This proves that these groups from outside NH and the USA should take their dirty Soros money they use to sue people when they don't get their own way and take a hike!
Citizens have a right to put up signs without filing any paperwork. It's called free speech.
Thank you voters. We old no so wealthy people appreciate it.

Funny... people keep talking about cuts, but the spending cap only puts a limit on the rate of growth for spending. The alderman can still increase spending at the rate of inflation to their heart's content.
So let's be clear on this issue - anyone talking about cuts is lying. Lying. Lying. Lying. To your face. The only thing that is being reduced is the rate of growth for the city budget, and even that may not be reduced if a supermajority of aldermen vote to override the cap in a given year.
You know what else is funny... Keep Manchester Moving paid for tens of thousands of dollars in mailers as well as coroplast signs for their cronies to hold on election day, but I can't find their filings on the Secretary of State's web site. I'd think an organization that is funneling that much money should have filed with the SoS as something or other.

Let's do it! Cut from Parks, Recreation, Arts and Events. In fact, just eliminate the department. They don't do anything anyway... think about this: when young professionals (high disposable incomes looking to spend money in your City) are looking for a place to settle, do you think they'll choose their destintion based on a tax/spending cap? No. They're looking for amenities - for perks that this City has to offer: trails, public golf courses, public pools, recreational activities, low student to teacher ratios, public transportation, etc. Your streets may be maintained, your lights may stay on, and your teenager may still have Spanish class, but come 5 years, you'll be wondering why crime is up, schools are deficient and your parks haven't been maintained or improved. More importantly, you'll wonder why your City has an inability to draw industry and new business to lessen the burden of the taxes you pay (which, in comparison to neighboring communities, really aren't that bad considering the services you take advantage of at your doorstep). In addition, because the City's curb appeal is dimished, your property values will diminish as well. Nobody wants to buy a home in a crime ridden neighborhood, next to an unmaintained, un-patroled park that now harbors drug dealers instead of soccer leagues. Well done. You've save $200/year in taxes, but your property just lost $20,000.00 in value. Kudos.

Bob, I am so sorry to hear that you have fallen for the left's scare tactics. Everyone jumps to the conclusion that we are going to have to cut vital services. How much can we cut from less vital services? Parks, recreation, arts and events? There are many places to cut funding that don't interrupt first responders. When you want to do something to make your life better, do you just go ask your boss for a raise because you want to spend more? doubtful, you live within your means, that is all this bill is about. It is about living within our means, without ripping off people.

Typical liberal reaction. When you lose in an election find a judicial loop hole to get your way. Liberals have been doing this for most of the 20th century through courts all the way up to the Supreme Court. Rediculous!
- Tom, Manchester
Typical liberals, They lose at the ballot box so they run to the courts. So this is what crybabies look like when they get older.
- Matt, Manchester
Bob of Manchester, you seem to have forgotten to add feast and famine to your list.
- Dale A., Manchester
Bob in Manchester,
That was the most riduculous unfounded lie I have ever seen posted in this website.
- Jim, Manchester
I figured since they tried three court cases to block this already they'd try at least one more. I just didn't expect it to be quite so petty. Pathetic.
- Jim, Manchester
Oh come on! Then should I file a complaint that when I got my ballot, the individual wasn't even telling ANYONE about the charter amendment on the back so that several people didn't even know to flip it over at all?
You LOST! Even after spending tens of thousands of dollars spewing lies and scare tactics, the people of Manchester have spoken and said that they want the tax cap!
- Derek, Manchester, NH
Yup the people have spoken, the retired, childless, wealthy.... And you "winners" of this vote will be speaking just as loudly when the roads are full of pot holes, the parks are over grown with broken swing sets and weeds, and the police and fire depts don't have working vehicles to get to and from calls. Its a fact, and it will happen.....way to go on the spending cap!!
- Bob, Manchester, NH
You lost get over it. Maybe if our illustrious alderman would stop spending my money faster than they take it from me we wouldn't have had to do this.
The people have spoken.
- Peter S, Manchester
Keep Manchester Moving. They had their opportunity. Everyone knew what it was that was on the ballot. They jammed my mailbox with enough garbage. They tried to run a bluff. I called it and voted for it. Enough is enough, tell this group to go pound sand.
In fact, I'm starting my own group, Manchester's Just Fine So Leave Us Alone.
