UNH poll: Sununu v. Shaheen is now a close race
Durham – A University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll shows the U.S. Senate race is up for grabs. Democrat Jeanne Shaheen's lead over GOP incumbent John Sununu has all but disappeared.
Sununu had trailed the former governor by 12 percent in the center's April poll. He closed the gap to 4 percent in a July 11-20 survey, which has an admitted 4.3 percent margin of error. The race remains volatile, as just 22 percent of the 475 likely voters surveyed are firmly committed to a candidate.
First-term U.S. House member Carol Shea-Porter continues to trail the man she ousted, Republican Jeb Bradley. The Democrat is 6 points behind the former 1st District congressman. She leads Bradley's main competitor for the GOP nomination, John Stephen, by just 6 points -- even though most voters do not know much about him. Shea-Porter's favorability rating has slipped to 35 percent, an unusually low score for an incumbent.
In the 2nd District, U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes continues to increase his favorability rating and holds solid leads over two potential November opponents, Jennifer Horn and Bob Clegg. Neither Republican is well known in the district.

Gregg Barrett, By performing due dilligence you will find that the ones responsible for high energy prices are the Eco-Facists and the NIMBY's of this great country. The Iraq war was another issue that many supported and voted for. Singling out Sununu is akin to blaming John Kennedy for the behavior & antics of Joe McCarthy back in the '50s

gregg,
I you guys keep running against "Bush's" war, you are going to get it handed to you in November. You guys had better come up with some better slogans other than "I am not GW" or "I did not vote for the war" . That horse is dead and buried. Oh, and looks like we on the cusp of winning that war, gregg.

REALITY CHECK PEOPLE. Sununu voted for that senseless IRAQ war which destroyed our economy and gave us over $4.00 a gallon gas prices. I think enough said.

"Bluehampshire", indeed. Carol Shea Porter's anti-Americanism can simply not be tolerated any longer. She's one of the typical liberals today who throw out the caveat of "We support the troops, but..." and then demeans them by calling their achievements and sacrifice worthless and tragic. Shaheen is a joke. Period. Awful governor, increased taxation ridiculously, rode the coattails of HRC, and now is clueless. Bring back the Republicans NOW!

Through her legislation as a state senator, NH became number one per capita (in the world) in Ritilin distribution.

I have wanted to sound off about Jeanne Shaheen for years. Besides the fact that she was a terrible governor, let us remember what she did for us shall we.... Remember how deregulation was going to Lower our electric bills? I'm still waiting on that one. All we have now is outrageous bills that the PUC just keeps saying there is nothing we can do. Why? Because of deregulation. Someday, somehow, we will get another electric company that will not have to buy power from PSNH. Years later....still waiting. How about you. How many hikes have there been now, 10..15. Thanks Jeanne. And how about Providian. Remember the sweetheart deal that she got for her family members getting jobs while the rest of us got interest rate hikes to pay for it. Sorry, she can keep her sweetheart deals to herself. So far for me and hundreds of thousands of other NH residents who are struggling to pay high energy bills, I just don't think we can possibly afford even one term of Jeanne Shaheen in any office. And for once I would like to see someone from NH grace our governor's seat and keep our senate seats. NH better wake up...we are soon becoming Taxachussetts.

The poll indicates that John Stephen is rising against both Bradley and CSP. Carol is a radical leftist and is a rubber stamp for the far left. She is about as out of touch with NH values as one can get. Bradley was a rubber stamp for the out-of-control Bush spending spree, has flip-flopped on key issues and got beat by CSP once already. It's time to send both into retirement and send John Stephen to DC to clean up the mess they left behind.

Sununu is clearly the better choice and pleasedon't forgte that once a junior senator wins a second time he/she becomes so much more valuable to a State. think about losing the Portsmouth Shipyard and how much Senator greg had to do with keeping that base here. How much money Greg and Sununu teamed up for bridge reconstruction and valuable projects like the Jobs Corp building going into Manchester. We need Sununu to win because if he does NH wins big.

Tom of Campton, it will be those who are fans of the Rock/Hip-Hop Opera “Barrack Obama, Superstar”. When he gets elected, we will no longer be in a democracy. Special interests will rule the roost and push their agenda with “Al-Quida” intensity. If the majority rejects their ideals, they will bully, use civil disobedience, and destroy private property to drag us kicking and screaming to bend to their ways. Teachers will target our children, Unions will take away their membership’s right to private ballots, and when they tell you the sun rises in the West, don’t question it, believe it.
I want someone who will represent New Hampshire, not Massachusetts. That’s why I’m voting for Sununu.
- Gene, Hooksett
One of Sununu's colleages in the Senate said if he loses, the Senate will then have to debate who is the smartest US Senator. Shaheen got in the race when it looked promising for her. Not so now, and maybe she wishes she'd stayed in Cambridge.
- Brad, Portsmouth
How can she even have a lead? The Democrats have shown us over the past couple years what they have in store for America and NH: higher energy prices, higher taxes, higher inflation, higher unemployment, higher spending, higher deficits, higher interest rates - who would vote for this?
- Tom, Campton
How can UNH get away with so biased a poll? Just the mere fact that it doesn't ask about Ken Blevens makes it more about supporting certain candidates than about understanding voters.
These push polls just reinforce the two-party system that is failing our country.

I'm a Sununu supporter. I applaud his embrace of New Hampshire values and his respectful treatment of constituents. I give him the benefit of the doubt on Iraq especially now that the surge is succeeding so well. I don't like his earmarks but I'll grudgingly forgive them.
Shaheen is a flam flam artist. The mainstream media have given her a free ride but the truth is out on YouTube thanks to amateur reporters.
These Dems are their own worst enemies. When they don't control the media they look just awful.
- Rowland, Fremont
I was at a John Edwards event when the Shaheen people were very aggressive. I told them I appreciated that Sununu advocated for privacy issues when no one else will. The person indicated that Democrates were concerned too.. I'm still waiting to hear how- all I hear is birth to death government control.
- Belinda, Peterborough
All Sununu has to do is allow Jeanne to just talk or write about her ideas and anyone with any common sense will realize she is so over matched, its not even funny. I am not sold on Sununu either but if my choice is between the two then the choice is easy to make.
- Kyle, Bedford
Senator Sununu has represented and supported New Hampshire well in the last 6 years.
As a member of the Senate finance Committee he ensures New Hampshire has a vote on one of the most important committees in the Senate.
Here are just a few of his most recent accomplishments. There are many more.
Helping to secure federal funding ($1 Million) for an instrument landing system at Mount Washington Regional Airport in Whitefield. Helping to secure $1 million in federal funding for the replacement of the structurally-deficient Route 4 bridge which connects West Lebanon with White River Junction, Vermont. Pledges his strong support for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to help ensure low-income families and seniors have the resources they need to pay high fuel bills in the coming winter months.
Senator Sununu has done an excellent job representing New Hampshire and deserves reelection.
- Doug Hogue, Merrimack
I am really tired of Mass transplants coming up here to escape their ruined state, and then voting in exactly the same liberal way that destroyed their own state.
It's like someone escaping a burning house, moving to a new one, and playing with matches.
- Mike R., Bedford
Wow, Mary, what a great reason to vote for someone.
When Sununu was listening to you, what he was thinking was "here's another rube I've got fooled...I can't believe these people. I've done nothing in six years and this lady actually likes me. Great way to earn a living!"
Smart move too, to vote for a Republican when the Democratic party will control the Senate...I'm sure that will help New Hampshire...
- Jack, Sunapee
Glad to see people waking up to the truth. John Sununu will continue to get my vote and not because of his party. It's because I've seen him quietly show up at different events over the years without an entourage or fanfare and just meet with the good people of N.H. and listen to them. He is one of the few that have impressed me with his sincerity.
