MANCHESTER - Restoring power after the ice storm of 2008 cost Public Service of New Hampshire an estimated $75 million, $50 million of which the utility hopes to recover from customers over time.

The state will be applying for a federal major disaster declaration within the next few days, Gov. John Lynch said this morning. Utility crews are racing to make the repairs, caused by the ice storm nine days ago, before a storm moves in this afternoon, dumping an expected 5 to 10 inches of snow on Southern New Hampshire.
Updated, 1:18 a.m. Thursday afternoon updates: PSNH pushed back Londonderry's schedule by two days and there's no school there tomorrow; 30 percent of Derry is still dark and classes are canceled until Monday; Salem's problems are mostly in North Salem; the main line in the New London/Warner area is still down; except for Onway Lake, Raymond is back on; two house fires in Amherst; many state parks and forests are closed.

SALEM - The 77-year-old man who passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning yesterday died after power to his home had been restored, officials said.
